When searching for the perfect engagement ring, you’ll notice that there’s one thing most of the traditional options have in common: the width of the band. Classic engagement rings typically feature a thin, delicate band, a look that will seemingly never go out of style. But that doesn’t mean you can’t opt for something different—a new trend that has been gaining steam in the wedding world is wide band engagement rings, and they offer a unique and practical look that may better suit your lifestyle.

What Is a Wide Band Engagement Ring?

A wide band engagement ring is defined as any band that is larger than 2.5MM wide. For comparison, the standard shank size for an engagement ring is 1.8-2MM wide.

According to jeweler Dan Moran of Concierge Diamonds, a wide band ring is ideal for someone who does a lot of work with their hands or lives a really active lifestyle, as they can be sturdier and more durable than something tiny and dainty. It’s obviously going to be a considerably different look than a super-thin band, but that’s not a bad thing.

If you want a ring that stands out in a crowd, a wide band is definitely one to consider. Here’s what to know before you purchase one.

Pros and Cons of Wide Band Engagement Rings

Wide bands can really allow you to get creative with your ring, giving you more room to add glittering stones if your budget allows. They’re also ideal for stacking, which is great when it comes time to add a wedding band.

This style of band also makes for a more durable option compared to a super thin band. “With a wider band for your engagement ring, you’re not only giving yourself more metal to support your center diamond if you have a large stone, but you’re making sure that you have enough metal on the prongs to secure any diamond pavé you have on the shank so it doesn't pop out if you knock your hand against something,” Moran goes on to explain. He also adds that wide bands can better endure stress tests—for example, they won’t bend or buckle as much if you’re doing something like carrying five grocery bags in one hand.

Of course, the modern look of a wide band isn’t for everyone. One of the most appealing things about a thin band is that they make even a smaller center diamond look larger in comparison, while a wide band may do the opposite.

What to Look for in a Wide Band Engagement Ring

  • What stones pair best with this type of ring? There is no particular cut of a stone that is better than others for your wide band ring, but it is important to consider the size of your stone. This band style might require a larger carat stone so that it can stand out amongst the metal.
  • How much do wide band engagement rings cost? While wide bands certainly offer more room for extra sparkle and gems, it’s important to remember that those added jewels cost more money. “A drawback could mean a potentially heftier price tag because you’re working with more precious metals in your ring,” Moran points out. “More gold and platinum means that the ring might cost more.”
  • Where can you purchase wide band engagement rings? Wide band engagement rings can be purchased from any engagement ring retailer! Just specify you are looking for a band that is larger than 2.55MM wide.

How to Care for a Wide Band Engagement Ring

Caring for your wide band engagement ring depends on the type of metal and style you decide to go with. Follow the same instructions as you normally would for any particular engagement ring style. The great thing about wide band engagement rings is that, if anything, they require less attention than a thinner band. Moran notes that while micro rings may be visually appealing, they’re not the most practical option since they aren’t meant to be worn every day. “The trend is swinging back to wider bands now because of the issues micro rings have become synonymous with, like bending easily and losing pavé,” Moran says.
