Margot Robbie has been a member of the Hollywood A-list ever since her star turn in The Wolf of Wall Street back in 2013. That year marked the beginning of a major turn in the actress' love life, too. Robbie met Tom Ackerley when he was an assistant director on the set of the her movie Suite Française. The Aussie and the Brit started as friends at first. But, it grew into love a year later and the couple began dating in 2014.
"We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, 'Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him,'" Robbie told Vogue in 2016. “And then it happened, and I was like, 'Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.'"
After two years as a couple, Robbie and Ackerley decided to make it official and tied the knot in 2016. The pair said "I do" at an intimate ceremony in Coorabell, a small town in Australia's Byron Bay, according to People.
While the married duo keep their personal life quiet, Robbie and Ackerley have not only created a life together but also collaborate creatively. Read ahead to learn more about the star's creative husband.
He Was an Extra in "Harry Potter"
Born in Surrey, Tom Ackerley has been in the movie business from a young age. When he was a teen, the producer got his start as an extra in the first three Harry Potter films. Robbie brought up his early start in an interview with Graham Norton.
"My husband is in the Harry Potter movies. I know, I was like, 'Had you told me sooner we would've been married very quickly,' " Robbie said on The Graham Norton Show. "But he was an extra when he was a little kid—he was one of the Slytherin extras when Draco pushes some kids out of the way to see Buckbeak in the third book. He pushes my husband out of the way."
He Works in the Film Industry
Ackerley decided his passions lied behind the camera and began working in the film industry after attending Godalming College in England. He began as a floor runner and set production assistant before taking on assistant director roles in 2012, according to IMDB.
Robbie Met Ackerley on Set
While working as a third assistant director for the movie Suite Française in 2013, Ackerley met Robbie, who was cast in a supporting role in the film. In an interview with Vogue, the actress referred to him as "the best looking guy in London." They began dating a year later.
Ackerley Co-Founded a Business With Robbie
The year Robbie and Ackerley began dating, they also went into business together alongside their friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. LuckyChap Entertainment is a production company with an emphasis on producing female-focused films and amplifying new voices. The company has worked on movies like I, Tonya and Promising Young Woman, and TV series like Dollface.
"If we can be a company that curates new and emerging talent, and can bring them through and provide that platform to do bigger movies and studio movies, that's ideally what we want to do," Ackerley said to MovieMaker Magazine in a 2020 interview. "It's nice to be in business with people where I already know we're going to do life together anyway," Robbie added.
The Couple Secretly Married
The private couple kept their engagement under wraps until they revealed they tied the knot in Byron Bay in December 2016, according to People. Robbie, who no longer has an Instagram account, posted a photo at the time showing off her ring while giving Ackerely a kiss on the cheek.
The Couple Postponed Their Honeymoon for Work
Career came first for the couple, who decided to postpone their honeymoon so they could continue production on the film they co-produced, I, Tonya. "We did this film instead of our honeymoon. There were times we were sitting in a car parked in Atlanta freezing cold being like, 'We should be on a beach right now. We should be on a honeymoon. What are we doing?!' Following our dream," Robbie explained to Extra in 2017.
Eventually, the couple went on honeymoon in Tahiti—and happened to run into Ellen Degeneres, Portia De Rossi, and President Barack Obama on the trip at their hotel gym. Robbie recounted their funny encounter on the Ellen Degeneres Show, explaining that her new husband was wearing revealing shorts. "We then had to do this whole like stretching class, but Tom meanwhile is trying to like, not reveal anything, and he's dying," Robbie said. "The gym instructor keeps saying to Tom, 'Tom, lunge! Lunge! You're not lunging!' and Tom's trying to lunge cross-legged."
He's a Support to Robbie's Career
Robbie has shared that Ackerley is an excellent emotional support system as she forges ahead in new acting roles. In an interview with Daily Mail in 2021, she said, "I'm always nervous to start any job. I have this complete crisis of faith and think, 'Oh my gosh, I'm not even good at acting and I can't do this.' Every time I do a movie, I turn to my husband and I'm like, 'I don't think I can do this'. He says something like, 'You do this every time. You'll be fine.' "
