Tika Sumpter and Nicholas James are officially married! The couple, who first met on the set of their show The Haves and the Have Nots, exchanged vows on Saturday, May 14, 2022, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Brides can exclusively report. "We're excited to be together and continue the journey," Tika says of marrying Nick, with whom she shares a five-year-old daughter, Ella. "We both walked down the aisle with clear eyes, knowing that the wedding wasn't just for the party. It was really for us."
The ceremony and reception were held at Chileno Bay Resorts & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection, a location the couple chose thanks to its proximity to their home state of California and the fact that they wanted their guests to have a vacation experience. "[We wanted everyone] to have a good time and celebrate this long, amazing journey that we've had," Tika says. "I didn't necessarily always want a destination wedding. It was just something that came to my mind. One of our first trips out of the country was Anguilla, and Mexico definitely has that beautiful, island vibe, so we were like why not do it in Cabo?"
The bride walked down the aisle in a strapless wedding dress by Galia Lahav and a flowing veil. The groom wore a pale blue custom Franc Milton suit.
The vibe of the day? "Modern boho-chic," Tika says. She and Nick worked with Ximena Perez of Amy Abbott Events to plan their perfect oceanfront ceremony, which took place in the sand shortly before sunset, and their reception, which was held in an on-site restaurant.
The entire celebration was planned with family and friends in mind, and Tika and Nick worked hard to ensure that the weekend was as special for their guests as it was for them. "My favorite part of the planning process was just looking at all of the names of my friends and family who were coming," Tika says. "Each one made me smile, so it made me even more excited to plan something beautiful. I wanted everybody to have a great time. I really had my friends, my family, my future husband in mind—it wasn't just for me. It was a real celebration of all the people who have held us up on this journey to make it what it is. They're really part of that thread. It was almost like a gift for them to really love where they are, love being together, and just overall having a really great time."
As for what's changed now that they're officially husband and wife, Tika admits that there hasn't been a huge shift. "I don't know how much is going to change with the newlywed stamp. It's going to be fun to call Nick my husband and hear him call me his wife," she says, adding, "I think we just cemented what we already are, and all of our friends were witnesses to that. It's a continuation of the journey, but I'm looking forward to doing what we've been doing, which is making sure that we have a solid foundation. Making sure we're strong. It's not a sprint, this journey, it's definitely not a sprint."
