During wedding season, Bambi Thomas and Dan Morris are involved in six to eight weddings on any given Saturday. As the owners of Tropics Entertainment, an entertainment company in Miami, they book and manage wedding bands from coast to coast and estimate that they did 250 weddings last year alone. But they never found time for their own. In fact, the couple has been engaged for five years, meaning they've worked some 1000 weddings since Dan popped the question on Valentine's Day in 2014. "It took us a while to get married because we already felt married from the moment we started dating in 2005," Bambi explains. "We spend so much time and energy providing the best entertainment and service for our clients' weddings and parties all year, that when we get some time for ourselves in the slow season, we’re all partied out. We need that time to refresh, not go into planning another wedding!"
But on June 12, 2019, Bambi and Dan finally found the time—fittingly, while they were "working" at a wedding conference! The couple was attending Engage!, a luxury conference for planners, photographers, and all wedding vendors, at Baha Mar in the Bahamas and their own engagement came up in conversation at dinner one night. Deb Morris, a wedding planner, was seated next to Dan at dinner and had a crazy idea: What if Dan and Bambi said "I do" the following day? "We were seated at separate tables, and Dan pulled me aside after dinner and, with everyone grinning behind him, asked if we should do this crazy thing," Bambi recalls.
She said "Why not?!" and by 9 p.m., it was decided that they would marry the next day—a mere 16 hours later! Keep reading to see how Dan and Bambi pulled off the nearly impossible task of planning a wedding in less than a day with help from wedding planner Deb Morris of Eventsful, the staff of Baha Mar, and photographer Dani Fine Photography. And spoiler alert: After a five year engagement, these two wedding pros found that a spontaneous wedding felt just right.
For Bambi, the hardest part of the planning process was finding the perfect dress. "We were almost able to get a dress from Hayley Paige—she was at the conference and she has a boutique on the island—but we moved up the ceremony a couple hours so we weren’t able to meet in time," recalls the bride. Instead, she had 30 minutes before her hair and makeup appointment to find something to wear. "I scrambled around the resort looking for white dresses," she says, ultimately finding a dress a the resort's Lilly Pulitzer boutique.
Dan, on the other hand, had things a little easier when it came to attire. He wore a gray Hugo Boss suit that was already in his suitcase!
Despite some untraditional planning, the wedding turned out to be a fairly traditional affair. As her "something borrowed," Bambi borrowed a pair of Mikimoto drop pearl earrings from Deb. As her "something blue," she wore a topaz ring from her best friend Lauren.
The bride's look was complete with a bouquet by Diana Venditto of Eventi Floral & Events, who gathered flowers from breakfast that morning to create Bambi's tropical bouquet of white phalaenopsis orchids and monstera leaves.
The couple wed on the dock at Baha Mar and asked florist Diana to take on yet another wedding duty: officiant! " She recited the most lovely and perfect non-denominational ceremony," Bambi says. Eight guests watched on, and the newlyweds recessed down the dock to Bob Marly's "Is This Love" once it was official.
The couple didn't have a traditional wedding reception, but they did celebrate with Champagne and cake! After, they Facetimed their families to share the good news. "Luckily everyone was ecstatic," recalls the bride. "They all said 'about time!'"
Looking back on their wedding ceremony and 16 hours of planning, Dan and Bambi (who made it official once they were back in Miami!) say they are happy they said "yes" to the "crazy idea." "It was so intimate," she says."In fact, the whole thing was exciting for all the vendors involved! We’ve seen thousands of weddings combined and it was a treat to do something so unexpected. It certainly created a lasting memory, and we feel a life-long bond with our new group of friends who used their wedding superpowers to make it all possible!"
