In November of 2013, before heading out to dinner, Tom told Karyn that he wanted to have a drink on the rooftop deck of their apartment building first. "When we got upstairs, I saw that Tom had decorated the entire space in lights," says Karyn. The next thing she knew, Tom was down on one knee, telling her he had a question he'd been waiting to ask her since they started dating seven years earlier.
The college sweethearts decided on Door County, Wisconsin — where Tom grew up along Lake Michigan — as the setting for their May 30, 2015, wedding. They invited 200 guests to the Horseshoe Bay Beach Club, with a relaxed, elegant vibe and breathtaking views. "We wanted a venue that was outdoors, where our guests could really enjoy the scenery," says Karyn. And that they did, with a waterfront ceremony and a tented reception on the lawn. The airy, elegant theme began with the invitation, combining navy and gold on crisp white stock.
Karyn didn't shy away from the sparkle, pairing a Martina Liana gown with shimmering cap sleeves with glitter-covered Kate Spade slingbacks.
The bridesmaids' gowns were perfect for the spring celebration, a rosy hue in flowing chiffon. Their bouquets of blush roses and hydrangeas (tied with blush ribbon, of course) were the perfect match for Karyn's lush white peonies.
Tom and his groomsmen put a relaxed spin on their navy blue suits with brown shoes and light pink ties. The ring bearer followed suit, with an appropriately adorable bow tie.
The waters of Lake Michigan set a dramatic scene for the couple's celebration.
At the ceremony, two arrangements of hydrangeas and peonies flanked the altar.
Nosegays of hydrangeas and peonies were hung on chairs along the aisle. The groom's best friend's father officiated, and personalized the ceremony by reading what the bride and groom had each written about why they were excited to marry one another. "It was so special to hear what we'd each said in that moment," says Karyn.
A close friend of the bride and groom sang an acoustic version of "Ho Hey" by The Lumineers as the newlyweds walked back up the aisle.
The reception took place in a Sperry tent strung with café lights. Table assignments were elegantly pinned to a board featuring a quote from The Great Gatsby.
The 25 tables were a mix of bare farm tables and round tables topped with ivory linens. Cut glass vases were filled with roses, astilbe, and peonies in blush and white. Karyn's mother made all of the place cards, with gold ink on navy paper.
The head table featured a wooden box filled with the bridesmaids bouquets, creating an overflowing floral display. Tom and Karyn sat at a sweetheart table, which was draped with a vine of greenery, hydrangeas, and roses.
The two-tiered wedding cake — layers of lemon cake with raspberry filling &mdash was paired with the couple's favorite dessert, Door County cherry pie. "We wanted to incorporate little things that we love," says Karyn. Later in the night, another one of the newlyweds' favorite foods made an appearance: A burrito truck serving chicken and sweet potato burritos!
After Karyn and Tom danced to John Mayer's "XO," she and her dad took a spin to a slowed-down acoustic version of "Sweet Child O' Mine." "The band did a really beautiful rendition," she says.
Her advice is to try to enjoy every minute of planning — "even when you're redoing the seating chart for the tenth time! Tom and I made sure to open a bottle of wine and plan the things we really cared about together," says Karyn.
