While online wedding registries (with handy built-in shipping functions that send the wedding gifts straight to the couple's house) have greatly limited the number of guests who bring gifts with them to the wedding, it still happens — most often if the couple is getting married locally, as well as with cards containing cash or gift cards. But since the newlyweds will be busy celebrating, who is responsible for any gifts that are given on the day of the wedding? Our experts weigh in.
It's not bad form for guests to bring gifts to your wedding, but it can be a hassle. The last thing you'll want to do when your reception comes to a close is figure out how to get the boxes up to your hotel room, especially while you're still in your wedding dress and have probably had a few drinks!
If your reception is in the hotel where you'll be staying, this process is pretty easy. Ask your wedding planner or the mother of the bride or groom to collect the gifts and have a bellman bring them up to your suite. If you received cash gifts, you may want to have them accompany the bellman so they can put any monetary gifts somewhere you'll easily find them (and also make sure nothing gets lost between the ballroom and your honeymoon suite).
If you're having the wedding at a separate venue, your mothers and your planner can load the gifts and cards into one of your parents' cars. You'll still have to pick the gifts up from their house in the days following the wedding, but it's one less thing to think about on your wedding night!
If some of the boxes are large or heavy, ask the groomsmen or ushers to pitch in to help. Try to keep cards with their corresponding gifts (it will make writing thank you notes so much easier!), and collect any loose cards all in one place so nothing gets lost.
