Ed Sheeran's relationship with now-wife Cherry Seaborn has been a long time coming. After secretly marrying in 2018 and welcoming their first child together in 2020, their romance has been full of excitement.
But who exactly is Cherry Seaborn? For starters, she's known Sheeran since childhood (the musician supposedly had a crush on her in high school!), however, the pair didn't link up romantically until years later. Ever since she's been Sheeran's musical muse, we have hit songs like "Photograph," "End Game" and more to thank because of their relationship.
And like her Grammy-award-winning husband, Seaborn has lived a fairly accomplished life so far. Between her days as a collegiate athlete, her work on Wall Street, and now her life as a new mother, here is everything you need to know about Sheeran's leading lady Cherry Seaborn.
She went to the same high school as Sheeran.
Seaborn and Sheeran actually attended the same high school in Suffolk (and knew each other since they were just 11 years old!). The pair were just friends, however, despite Sheeran reportedly having a crush on her (Seaborn had a boyfriend at the time). There, she excelled in athletics, specifically field hockey.
She was a collegiate field hockey star.
As Sheeran went on to pursue a career in music, Seaborn studied science at Durham University in the United Kingdom. The athlete proved to be a star on the field hockey field and led the school's hockey team to two British University championship victories in 2012 and 2013.
She received a master's degree from Duke University.
After graduating from Durham in 2013, she took her studies across the pond to pursue a master's in management studies at Duke University. She continued to play Division I field hockey at the North Carolina university.
Prior to becoming a Duke student, Seaborn had only visited the United States once before. "Ever since I was in high school I’ve always wanted to...study in the United States," Seaborn told Duke's The Chronicle in 2013. "I looked into different schools that were good academically and also at hockey, and Duke was one that really jumped out at me."
She used to work on Wall Street.
Seaborn put her bachelor's and master's degrees to use after graduation when she began working on Wall Street for accounting firm Deloitte. Yet, in 2016 Seaborn moved back to the U.K.—Deloitte let her transfer from New York to the London office—so she could be closer to Sheeran.
In 2015, Seaborn and Sheeran reunited in Manhattan.
Despite knowing each other for years, their paths didn't cross again until 2015. The pair reconnected in 2015 while Sheeran was touring in the U.S.—Seaborn was subsequently living in Manhattan at the time.
She's partied at Taylor Swift's Rhode Island mansion.
In fact, Seaborn and Sheeran's first date was at Taylor Swift's notorious Fourth of July party in Rhode Island in 2015. He recalled the legendary date to People, saying, "I went on tour again, and then I went to Taylor’s 4th of July party. I was texting [Seaborn], and she was like, ‘I’m in Rhode Island at a 4th of July party,’ and I was like, ‘So am I.’ I kinda said to Taylor, ‘Can I invite one of my old schoolmates?’ The rest is history." What a way to kick off a relationship!
She's Sheeran's musical muse.
After undergoing a brief long-distance relationship, there's evidence that Sheeran's hit song "Photograph" was written about her.
He also sang about their romance on his track with Taylor Swift "End Game," too, with lyrics like “Knew it when I was young / We connected when we were a little bit older” and “Something was born on the Fourth of July" that allude to the beginning of their love story.
But she's also the reason why he took a break from music.
Her move back to London in 2016 prompted Sheeran to take a break from music (much to the disdain of his fan base), giving the couple time to strengthen their relationship. "We were basically like, ‘Let’s both quit our jobs and let’s have a year of forming a tight bond and a relationship,'" Sheeran told Zane Lowe of Beat's 1 during an interview in 2017. "So we went traveling and spent every day for a year together."
While the couple kept their proposal news under wraps for nearly a month, Sheeran popped the question during the holidays in 2017. He announced the heartwarming news the following January, writing, "Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx," on Instagram.
She hosted a secret wedding.
In December 2018, the couple officially became husband and wife. The winter nuptials were kept fairly low-key, with just 40 guests and media coverage under wraps. However, nine months after saying "I do," the newlyweds hosted a traditional, carnival-inspired celebration in September. In true A-list fashion, their second Suffolk nuptials were star-studded—the guest list even included a royal or two!
She's a new mom!
At the end of August in 2020, Seaborn welcomed her first child with the singer: a baby girl named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran. "Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter," wrote Sheeran on Instagram on September 1, 2020. "We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here."
