What to Do When You're Just Not That Into Your Wedding Dress Anymore

Whether you initially felt pressured into purchasing a wedding dress or simply bought yours way too far in advance and fell out of love over time, the good news is that you're not totally screwed out of all your money. Take a deep breath and relax—you have plenty of viable options.

Try Switching Out the Accessories First

You like it okay, but still worry that wow factor is missing? Then take the professional advice of wedding planner Tracie Domino, founder of Tracie Domino Events, and try selecting a different veil, embellished belt, wedding sash or adding something to your hair, like a fresh floral crown or beautiful bejeweled headband, to jazz it up a bit.

Have It Altered

Sometimes a few simple changes can make a world of difference and help you fall head over heels for your dress once again, says Boston-based wedding photographer Kristin Griffin. Pinpoint the problem area, and ask about alterations, such as adding straps, cap sleeves, a sheer overlay or creating a new neckline. Maybe you want to remove something too, which any skilled seamstress should be able to assist you with.

Sell Your Dress Online to Recoup Some Costs

If your budget allows for it, and you're 100 percent convinced you don't want to wear it anymore, you can always purchase a new wedding dress and put yours up for sale on the Internet, offers Domino. "Luckily, there are several websites, like Tradesy.com and OnceWed, where you can market it as an unworn, unaltered gown and most likely recoup a good percentage of the original purchase price when and if it sells."

Ask About the Return Policy

If you bought your dress off the rack check with the store regarding their return policy. Even if you didn't, see what you can work out. "Some shops may take back dresses that are still in stock for full or partial refund or store credit if you haven't had it altered yet," notes Griffin. You can also try negotiating an exchange if the new dress you're dying to get is from the same place.
