Giving your pout a pop of color instantly elevates your wedding makeup look. While a red lip is a timeless classic, this season it's all about purple. This unconventional color comes in a myriad of formulas and shades — from glossy violet to matte blackberry. And it's easier to pull off then you might think. We spoke with celebrity makeup artist and Violet Grey ambassador Kira Nasrat to get her expert tips for pulling of a dramatic purple statement lip. Here's what you need to know.
Our Top Tips
1. Exfoliate and Moisturize.
Purple isn't a forgiving shade, so you'll want to make sure your lips aren't dry or peeling. Otherwise you run the risk of looking like The Walking Dead versus a bridal beauty. To get lips smooth and supple, Nasrat uses Sara Happ Lip Scrub to slough away dry skin and then By Terry Baume de Rose to hydrate. "I like to exfoliate the night before, but you can certainly do it right before applying lipstick too." (Lip scrub, $24, Sara Happ available at Nordstrom; Rose balm, $60, By Terry available at Barneys New York)
2. Go Minimal with Eye Makeup.
Because a bold lip speaks for itself, Nasrat recommends keeping eyes neutral. "I would pair a purple lip with just some waterproof mascara and a bare eye." This way you can let your lips do the talking — and kissing (after all, it's your wedding day).
4. Experiment with Color.
Not all purples are created equal, so don't be afraid to play around with a variety of shades and formulas — that's what your makeup trials are for! "It's fun to add different colors to the purple — either to tone it down or make it even deeper." By exploring all of your options, you'll guarantee your pout is picture perfect on your big day.
