Asking your closest gal pals to stand by your side on your wedding day can be one of the coolest and most exciting moments of your wedding adventure. It may be something you have waited to do for quite some time, even deciding who your bridesmaids would be long before you were even engaged (or dating someone seriously).
But before you pop the question to them, it's important to sit down and figure out a few key details that'll make them feel stress-free and excited when they accept their new role as a member of your bridal tribe.
Here are the four things you'll want to tell your friends before you formally ask them to be your bridesmaids.
1. How Much Time
Give your friends a heads-up of how much of a time commitment being in your bridal party will be. Do you expect them to give up one Saturday a month to help you with wedding details and DIY projects? Or are you asking nothing of them except to show up on your wedding day? Let them know ahead of time how many days (or even hours) might go into being your bridesmaid.
2. How Much Money
Because everyone knows being a bridesmaid isn't cheap, let your friends know what kind of money commitment you are asking from them. How much do you think the bridesmaid dress will be? Even if you don't have specifics at this point, giving them a ballpark of what you're thinking is helpful. Also, are you thinking about going on a bachelorette party somewhere exotic—which also means expensive? Let them know what you're thinking so far, so they have an idea of about how much money it may cost them.
3. What You Expect
Being a bridesmaid can be a whole lot of fun, but it can also be a whole lot of time, money, and energy. Be clear about what kind of bridesmaid duties they may have. Also, what can they expect from you? Constant emails? Lots of wedding rules and expectations? Are you planning on being a super chill bride? How many bridesmaids will be in the bridal party?
4. Important Dates
Finally, give your friends as many dates as possible—even estimates or ranges. What months are you thinking of having the bachelorette and bridal shower? How about the wedding? Letting them know these key dates ahead of time will help them to plan ahead, which means that they'll be able to be there for you when you need them by your side!
