Gabrielle Gibson's dreams are about to come true. The South-Jersey native will appear on TLC's Say Yes to the Dress later this month and will serve as the New York version's first transgender bride. The 33-year-old, who goes by Gabby, is to wed 32-year-old love Jaden Rogers.
Gibson recently told LGBT blog Unicorn Booty that she felt "humbled" by being on the show. Her journey began after the hairstylist and makeup artist booked a fitting appointment at Kleinfeld's, the store regularly featured on the series. TLC happened to be filming the show during her appointment, and producers gave her the option to audition. Talk about luck!
Gibson informed producers she was transgender during the application process. The form asked for three descriptive words about the bride-to-be. "The three words I put down were: outgoing, outrageous, and transgender. I never wanted to surprise them. I thought, let’s just be open and honest about it from day one," she revealed to the blog. "'Hey, this is who I am and this is what I am about and this is what you get from me.' "
After submitting a final tape, Gibson was asked to appear on the show. “We walk in the store and I almost lost it. I was so overwhelmed with emotions because you see this show that you have watched so much and it’s now your turn,” she recalled. “It’s like, 'Oh my God! I’m here.' They don’t let you go past a certain point because they want your reaction to be authentic. So they greet you at the door. You feel like you’re a kid at Christmas time and you aren’t allowed to open your presents until Christmas morning.”
"[The producers] were very attentive and respectful," Gibson continued. "They didn’t ask any questions about surgeries or do you still have this or that. None of those questions were ever brought up. None of the ‘basic curiosity questions’ I call them. That moment felt so empowering. I felt so beautiful and seen.”
