Swiping right on Tinder may have just paid off, folks. The dating app—in honor of Pride Month—just announced that it's throwing a $100K wedding for an LGBT couple who met and fell in love through their site. As with any contest though, there are some strict guidelines. But before we delve into those details, just where exactly did this idea come from?
Back in 2016, Tinder actually made headlines when it released all-inclusive gender options for singles. After the debut, the dating app polled their LGBT members and found some shocking results. "We learned that gay male users are 31.2 percent more likely than their cisgender male counterparts to feel unsafe showing affection publicly," Tinder's sociologist Dr. Jess Carbino said in a Brit + Co. article. But that's not all. According to the survey, one in five lesbian women and over 40% of gay men say they don't engage in PDA because they fear for their safety.
As a direct response to these heartbreaking findings, Tinder hopes to break the mold with their revolutionary gender options. "With a strong understanding of these challenges, Tinder has made it a priority to connect our LGBTQ+ users with the platform to safely and openly make connections, explore their preferences, and self-identify any way they want with 37 gender options," Dr. Carbino said.
One of the ways they plan to support their LGBT users? With a #TinderSuccessStory contest running throughout the month of June. Here's how you can apply to win a completely paid for, $100K wedding:
