One surefire way to make a perfect proposal even more special? Add a celebrity.
For these lucky couples, celebrities played almost as big a role in their engagement as the couples themselves. Whether it happened onstage at a concert, or in one case, via a very sneaky Netflix video, each of these fans not only got the surprise of their lives with a ring, but they also got the once-in-a-lifetime shock of having their favorite stars play a role in their moment. Whether the celeb's music played a special role in the couple's relationship, à la Taylor Swift, or if one of the partners happens to be a superfan, like in the case of the Backstreet Boys, these sweet celeb proposals are equal parts over the top and meaningful.
Here are some of our favorite celebrity proposal stories—we're willing to bet the A-listers earned an invite to the nuptials as well.
Earlier this year, a Taylor Swift fan got the surprise of his life when his boyfriend brought in the singer herself to help with his proposal. Swift's music has reportedly played a big role in the couple's relationship, and her song "King of My Heart" played when Alex Goldschmidt decided to pop the question. Goldschmidt had asked Swift to perform "King of My Heart" live for them after he had proposed to his boyfriend, Ross, and she happily obliged.
This isn't the only time Swift has been a part of a fan's proposal: A couple who first met during Swift's "Red" tour got engaged during a meet and greet with the star in 2018. The man got down on one knee directly in front of Swift, leaving the celeb just as shocked as the bride-to-be.
The Backstreet Boys
During a show at their Las Vegas residency, the '90s heartthrobs helped a marine veteran pop the question to his superfan girlfriend. While Lori Meono was meeting the band backstage before the concert, her boyfriend Lance Williams snuck up behind her and got down on one knee. (Watch the moment here.) She was so busy chatting with the boys that she didn't notice at first, but when she turned around she saw the surprise of her life! Something similar happened for a couple in 2017, who also got engaged backstage with BSB.
Celine Dion knows a thing or two about "The Power of Love"—so it's no surprise the powerhouse singer played a role in a couple's proposal. When they were dating, Nick Janevski and Austin McMillan would listen to Dion's hit "My Heart Will Go On" every time they were in the car, inspiring Janevski to pop the question at a Celine Dion concert. To make an already perfect proposal plan even better, the singer's manager arranged for the couple to go back stage, and Janevski got down on one knee right in front of Celine. Her face was priceless (she looked just as shocked as McMillan did!), and she reportedly told the couple, "I hope you have a long and happy marriage like my husband and I did."
At the end of a 2018 episode of Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen casually took a question from the audience, prompting Jackson up to the stage. "Jackson, you have a question," Cohen said. Jackson then called his boyfriend up to the stage and proposed Bravo-style. "Dakota, you're the Kim to my Kroy. The napalm to my Teresa, the Jovani to my Luann, the quiet woman to my Shannon. I love you and I only have Ramona eyes for you," he said. "Will you marry me?" Dakota said yes, and the pair shared a kiss on national television.
Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant
In what might be the most elaborate and unique celebrity proposal scheme ever, a man named Conor enlisted the stars of his and his girlfriend's favorite Netflix show, The Santa Clarita Diet, to help him pop the question. Kamela thought she was appearing on a reality show, and viewed a video of Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant delivering marriage advice. But then, Conor appeared in the video, revealing he had something he wanted to ask her IRL. Conor pulled out a ring box from under the couch, leaving Kamela (and us!) absolutely shocked.
During the Brooklyn stop of her Witness tour, Katy Perry (who recently got engaged herself!) invited fans Katy and Becky onstage to make a wish. Fan Katy delivered some of the lyrics from Perry's "Teenage Dream," telling her girlfriend that she thought she was pretty "without any makeup on" and perfect "when she tells the punchline wrong." She proceeded to get down on one knee in front of an audience of thousands of screaming fans.
Mariah Carey's longtime backup dancer, Manwe, let his boyfriend Sumeet know that he would "Always Be [His] Baby" by getting down on one knee during a Mariah concert. If someone is going to steal Mimi's spotlight, this is the way to do it.
Considering how romantic Ed Sheeran's music is (see: "Perfect"), it's hardly a surprise that couples want to get engaged at his concerts; he's stopped his show for the sake of happy couples a few times. But the best one has to be when Ed hopped onstage at a Little Mix show to serenade group member Jessy Nelson while her boyfriend, Jake Roche of Rixton, popped the question. While their engagement didn't last, this proposal is memorable.
Like Sheeran, Adele writes music that's basically made for proposals, which is why a number of couples have enlisted the British singer's help for their special moments. During a show in Copenhagen, a Swedish man shocked his boyfriend and Adele when he got down on one knee onstage. Her reaction was priceless: “That’s amazing, I’m going to cry,” she said while jumping up and down. “Should I be your surrogate if you have children? I’d love to have a baby with someone Swedish."
To propose to his girlfriend, Janet, musician Matt Hubard had Scrubs star Zach Braff (who is one of her favorite actors) make a video of himself as part of a Kickstarter campaign. "Sorry, you caught me listening to one of my favorite songs by my good friend Matt," Braff says in the video. "Man, he can really rock out. He asked me to help him with a little question he'd like to ask you, Janice," Braff continued. "He knows...that he never became the rock star that he promised he would become...But he's hoping you can overlook that. And he'd like you to please consider being his wife." Not surprisingly, she said yes.
Ryan Gosling, Saroise Ronan, and Eva Mendes
While many Ryan Gosling fans have likely imagined the actor being a part of their proposal, it turned into a reality for one lucky woman at SXSW in 2015. A woman was feeling particularly romantic after a screening of his movie, Lost River, and decided to spontaneously propose to her girlfriend. Gosling handed over the microphone for the crowd to bear witness.
