Most couples wouldn’t let anything distract them or their guests from their wedding day. Think about it: You’ve spent months trying to plan the perfect day—and dealt with all the hiccups along the way—so it's no wonder you'd want the day to be all about you! But this Russian couple had no problem directing all their guests’ attention somewhere else right in the middle of the ceremony.
Yekaterina and Dmitry Vasilyev got married last Sunday in Pushkin, Russia, during the Spain v. Russia World Cup game. According to The New York Post, the celebration was put on hold so they could watch their home country defeat Spain in the match. In a totally unexpected upset, Russia won during a penalty shootout, which the couple and their wedding guests watched from a cell phone.
Sporting events don't typically overshadow weddings, but it sounds like this was a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. The game ended in a 1-1 tie and went into overtime during the newlywed’s reception.
These soccer fans had no problem turning their wedding reception into a victory party when Russia’s goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev secured a 4–3 shootout win to move them in to the last eight.
An amateur player himself, the groom called it "the best gift ever."
Maybe this couple will continue their World Cup wedding celebration in Sochi, where Russia will face Croatia on July 6.
