While all eyes would ideally be on the bride, sometimes things happen. Sometimes spotlights are stolen. And sometimes you get upstaged by a damn horse. Hey, it happens.
No wedding party member sets out to upstage the bride (well, we would hope). But occasionally, these things just cannot be helped.
But it wasn't a rouge bridesmaid or mother-in-law dressed in white that stole this bride's thunder. It was actually her escort to the ceremony: her horse, Cricket. Bride Patti Womer arrived at the ceremony on the back of her paint mare—a gift from her father when she was just eight-years-old—and rode alongside her father's horse, Dutch, who carried an empty saddle.
Since Patti's father had sadly passed away back in 2016, being escorted to the ceremony by the horses they had often ridden together was a sentimental way to honor her late father, Patti explained. "This just showed that my father was there with me through the whole thing," the bride to Yahoo Lifestyle. Sweet, right? And clearly, Cricket was ecstatic about her wedding-day job. In fact, she practically stole the spotlight in the wedding photos where she actually appeared to be grinning from ear-to-ear.
In the photos photographer Tony Bendele snapped at the nuptials, Cricket cheesed it up for the camera, showing off her teeth in a wide smile. “It actually caught my eye initially when we first started doing the photographs," Bendele told Yahoo. "As the bride was smiling the horse would look up and put its teeth just like that.”
Since posting the photos online, the bride's smiling, four-legged wedding escort is all anyone can talk about—but luckily this bride doesn't mind sharing the spotlight. “I honestly don’t mind having attention on her instead of me," said Patti. "Dutch and Cricket are such a big part of me, and I will always have a special place in my heart for them."
Now it looks like the Internet does, too! Think we can book Cricket for our wedding?
