How to Choose the Best Crystal Facial Roller for Your Skin

Jade, rose quartz, amethyst, or obsidian?

Stocksy

You'd have to be living under a rock (or in the midst of a serious social media detox) to not have noticed the skincare tool that has taken over the beauty community: crystal facial rollers.

“Crystal facial rollers are amazing tools to alleviate tension, increase circulation, and minimize puffiness,” explains Kandice Hansen, REVOLVE beauty buyer, adding that they help the ingredients in your serums, moisturizers, and oils to absorb better.

•Kandice Hansen is the beauty buyer at leading e-retailer REVOLVE. In December 2016, she spearheaded the launch of @REVOLVEbeauty, acquiring more than 250 brands and 7,500 products.

•Esthetician Karina Sulzer is the CEO and founder of Skin Gym, an L.A.-based wellness brand that replaces invasive anti-aging techniques with facial massaging tools. Skin Gym recently opened its first outpost, Skin Camp, L.A.'s only "facial workout" studio.

Since the obsession over the tool began, rollers featuring a variety of different crystals, from jade to rose quartz, have hit the market, each with different physical and metaphysical properties. And just as your skin type determines what topical products you slather on, it should also govern the tools you choose, too. So, how do you know whether to opt for a jade, rose quartz, amethyst, or obsidian facial roller? We asked the pros to weigh in on the best crystal facial rollers for your complexion.

Jade

Jade has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. This OG stone stays cool, so it calms irritation and inflammation. It’s also great for smoothing fine lines and tightening skin, according to Karina Sulzer, founder of Skin Gym. Plus, jade reportedly supports lymphatic drainage to flush toxins and bacteria that cause unsightly blemishes.

Rose Quartz

“Rose quartz is the ultimate crystal for self-love and care,” says Hansen. It’s long been associated with beauty and youth. The ancient Egyptians even believed that it could be used to maintain a youthful appearance. “This is probably due to the fact that rose quartz has properties that reduce tension, promote healing, and increase cell turnover,” explains Sulzer.

Amethyst

“What many people don’t know about amethyst is how powerful it is at purifying the skin,” reveals Sulzer. This popular purple stone soothes inflammation associated with acne and tightens pores. Plus, it’s reportedly extremely beneficial for boosting blood flow, while also regenerating cells and helping to mitigate the effects of daily stress on facial muscles.

Obsidian

“With its deep black color and glass-like texture, obsidian is one of the most intriguing crystals,” notes Sulzer. It’s deeply detoxifying and has the ability to release tension as well as toxicity. According to skincare gurus, when used on the face, it works to draw out impurities, which can help decongest pores and combat breakouts. “This stone encourages overall balance in the skin,” Hansen adds.
