When Malori Buie first met Dan Hunter, he came with a great reference. “My best friend grew up with Dan in Wichita Falls,” says Emily. “That same friend introduced us in February of 2013 at a concert together in Fort Worth, Texas.” They, of course, quickly hit it off. A few years later, as they were packing for a trip to Florida, Dan asked Malori to sit down for a moment to talk as they were heading out the door. “He completely caught me off guard as he got down on one knee,” says Malori. “I screamed yes and ran around the house!”
When Malori started researching wedding venues in Telluride, Colorado, she fell in love with The Golden Ledge. “I called Wendy of Soirée Telluride, and listening to her talk about the venue, I knew it was exactly what I wanted,” says Malori. The mountain-top aspen grove offers spectacular panoramic views, a dramatic cathedral of trees, and an open field perfect for pitching a sailcloth tent. On June 24, 2017, 165 guests arrived to see the site, which the couple had decorated to emphasize the natural setting, using shades of blue, green, and copper . “We didn’t want our wedding to be too formal or stuffy,” she says. “We wanted our loved ones to feel happy and free, in the middle of Mother Nature, with a fun band and great food.”
Malori’s Reem Acra wedding gown featured a plunging lace neckline, a fitted silk skirt, and delicate cap sleeves. “I had a hard time knowing what I wanted (and tried on probably 80 dresses!) until I found this one. I immediately knew it was the one,” she says. Her organic bouquet combined tea roses, white peonies, and jasmine vine.
With a dozen bridesmaids, Malori had a hard time choosing a single dress and instead opted for four styles in the same color and fabric. Her ‘maids all wore Joanna August dresses, topped with perfectly bohemian flower crowns. Even the couple’s dog made an appearance, serving as flower dog in a wreath of greenery.
“Walking through the trees to the cathedral of aspens was so dramatic and seemed like a dream,” says Malori. She and her father made their way to the open-air ceremony, where arrangements on copper pedestals framed the altar.
Even the approach to the ceremony venue was stunning
were dropped off at the end of a path that winds through the woods, leading to the spectacular clearing.
A string trio played as Dan and Malori exchanged traditional vows, surrounded by a grove of towering aspen trees.
Marble tiles served as both escort cards and favors, with guests’ names written in copper calligraphy.
Cocktail hour took place in the field surrounding the tent, where guests sipped Moscow mules and lavender margaritas and dined on smoked duck breast salad on brioche points and quail and bacon jalapeño poppers. Malori swapped her veil for a floral crown before she and Dan made their grand entrance.
Rectangular tables were topped with seafoam runners and centerpiece filled with copper accents. Candles were placed in marble and copper holders, and the centerpieces combined peach-toned blooms with soft greenery. Each guest’s seat was marked with a marble charger with gold accents.
After a surf-and-turf dinner of grilled trout with fresh chives and herb-rubbed hanger steak, guests indulged in three types of cake. The wedding cake featured vanilla pound cake with raspberry ream and chocolate cake with chocolate ganache, while the groom’s cake (decorated with Dan’s family’s ranch brand) had layers of vanilla sponge cake with dulce de leche filling.
Dan and Malori flew in a band from Dallas for the reception. “In10City played at Dan’s brother’s wedding, and we knew they would be awesome,” says Malori. “They’re known for their mashups, and they did an amazing job!”
