It's a wonderful day for love and marriage for all! After years of court battles and activism, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage! The 5-4 ruling this morning stated that the Constitution guarantees gay couples nationwide the legal right to marry.
"Today is a big step in our march toward equality," President Barack Obama tweeted as the news broke. "Gay and lesbian couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else. #LoveWins."
The New York Times reports that in his majority opinion for the case, Justice Anthony Kennedy Kennedy said gay and lesbian couples have a fundamental right to marry. "No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family," he wrote. "In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were."
In striking down gay marriage bans in states such as Georgia and North Dakota, the ruling guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry under the Constitution in those states and 11 others.
As the decision came out, tons of excited crowds descended on the plaza outside the Supreme Court building in Washington, DC. According to the New York Times, the masses chanted, "Love had won," and A few moments later, a men's choir got together and sang "Make Them Hear You" in a powerful moment of celebration.
