Sterling K. Brown and his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe, are costars on This Is Us, but you won’t catch them running lines together. In an interview with E! News on the red carpet before the 2017 Emmy Awards, the couple explained how they’ve learned over the years to keep their home and work lives as separate as possible.
“Sterling and I have been in the game for a long time. We go back to college,” Bathe said, according to E! News. “We’ve learned that there are certain minefields and pitfalls in our relationship; like a slalom, we just move right past them. Rehearsing together is one of those things.” Brown (wisely) agreed with his wife, adding, “It’s that simple!”
Brown, 41, is nominated at Sunday night’s event for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Randall Pearson in the tear-jerking show. Of the nomination—his second after receiving an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series nod last year for his part in The People v. O.J. Simpson—he told E!, “I feel fantastic. I get a chance to be with my beautiful wife. I get a chance to share this night with my amazing cast. What do I have not to like?”
Brown and Bathe, also 41, met while they were both attending college at Stanford University. The pair married in 2007 and have two young sons, Andrew and Amaré. They starred together on both Army Wives and This Is Us, in which Bathe plays Yvette, a friend of Brown's character’s parents. Brown has previously discussed his and Bathe’s extremely similar career (and life) trajectories. “We went to undergrad together, we went to grad school together, we were born in St. Louis, and even more impressive, we were born in the same hospital,” Brown told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year. “Crazier than that, our social security numbers are only three digits apart. Like, it’s crazy! But we didn’t meet until age 18, freshman year at Stanford University.”
