The secret is out! British comedian and writer Stephen Fry confirmed his engagement to his partner Elliott Spencer today after the British press reported that he'd given formal notice to get married at a register office in Dereham, Norfolk.
"Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag," Fry tweeted. "I'm very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!"
His personal assistant followed up on his informal announcement, saying, "Stephen Fry is very happy and proud to say that he has set the wheels in motion for a wedding sometime in the future but no date has been set due to a busy work schedule."
Fry, who is known for his comedic partnership with Hugh Laurie, for narrating all seven Harry Potter audiobooks in the U.K., and his role in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, has reportedly been with Spencer since last year. Spencer tweeted a telltale photo of the couple at dinner with friends in August, seen above. Their relationship has raised some eyebrows, as Spencer is 30 years younger than Fry.
Still, he hasn't let detractors take away from his joy. He sent out an exuberant tweet, below, after receiving reactions to the news.
The BBC reports that documents on display in Norwich state that the wedding will take place in Breckland Business Centre, which houses the register office.
The British custom of publicly posting marriage licenses has created similar situations in the past; this accidental reveal of specific wedding plans reminds us of when it happened George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin in Oxford mere weeks before their Italian destination wedding!
