Introducing Brides' newest foodie-celebrating series, in which we bring beautiful, handcrafted, Instagram-approved signature cocktails to you four times a week! Each month, we'll shine a spotlight on two master mixologists and their one-of-a-kind libations, with recipes and tips on how you can incorporate these signature beverages into your wedding menu, engagement party, bachelor/bachelorette parties, or just an extra-sweet night at home in the kitchen together. For the first half of July, Natalie Migliarini, the master mixer behind Seattle-based home bartending website Beautiful Booze, sets the bar high with eight boozy beauties to keep you and your guests sipping and swinging all evening long. Stay tuned to hear from more of your favorite bartenders across the country (and beyond!)—because as we all know, the drinks really do make the wedding.
Old Fashioned Party
"When entertaining a lot of guests, not everyone is going to like the same thing. Combat this with a DIY cocktail bar! Any classic cocktail can have an unlimited number of variations, including the Southern-born Old Fashioned. First, there is a choice in the liquor (base) selection—this can be as small or vast as you like in range, but we always recommend at least a bourbon, tequila/mezcal, and rum (we also had a new bottle of Pink Port in the fridge so we added it to the bar). Next, we made a few different flavored simple syrups, and finally, bitters. With a limited number of ingredients and such a simple cocktail, your guests can go all night without having the same cocktail twice." —Natalie
- 2 oz. of preferred spirit (whiskey, tequila/mezcal, rum, or port)
- ½ oz. preferred simple syrup (candied orange, cherry, allspice, or strawberry)
- 2–3 dashes preferred bitters (Angostura, chocolate, orange, or Earl Grey)
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir gently for 30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange peel, fresh strawberry, cherry, or herb.
