Serena Williams and Meghan Markle have been besties for a long time, so it wasn't a total surprise that Williams took the lead when it came to planning Markle's stateside baby shower. And because this is Williams we're talking about here, she made sure the event was a complete showstopper. The tennis champion reportedly footed a $200,000 bill and ensured her pal had the most perfect time in New York City.
Williams revealed to People that putting together such a luxe celebration wasn't exactly easy. “Planning something like that takes a lot of effort,” she said. “I’m a perfectionist, so I’m like, ‘Let’s make it perfect.' ”
By all accounts, she succeeded. The elegant baby shower was held in the penthouse suite of the Mark Hotel on the Upper East Side, and the attendees included Amal Clooney, Jessica Mulroney, Abigail Spencer, and Gayle King. The guests were treated to a classy flower-arranging lesson and music from New York City–based harpist and singer Erin Hill. Plus, because Markle is a known foodie, the catering was top-notch as well: Vanity Fair reported that world-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten planned a "dessert-tasting experience," and a couple of Instagram shots offered a glimpse at the adorable baby-themed cookies served at the party.
The whole thing seemed worth it to Williams, who has always shown that she's a big supporter of the Duchess of Sussex. In December, she told People that Markle hadn't changed at all since the royal wedding, and that she put others first, even while pregnant.
“I’m like, ‘How are you?’ and she’s like, ‘No, how are you?’ and I’m like, ‘You’re so sweet, but I’m really asking—how are YOU?’ ” Williams said. “I’m like, ‘Meghan, stop being so nice...you’re the pregnant one, aren’t you supposed to have hormones, why are you so sweet?’ But that’s always been her.”
Williams has Markle's back and there's no doubt she's going to be watching out for her friend once the royal baby is here in just a few weeks.
