Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian may have wed in a lavish ceremony two years after they first started dating, but it sounds like Williams knew it was meant to be when they first met in 2015. "I had this sense, like, 'I’m going to marry this guy, but I’m not ready yet, but I know I’m going to marry this guy,'" she told InStyle. The tennis superstar is on the cover of InStyle's "Badass Women" issue, and in the accompanying profile, she gave fans a glimpse into what happened when she and her now-husband first started "chatting."
"I didn’t know his world at all, but I’ve always been tech-savvy. I had a few investments before I met him, and I wanted to know more," Williams told InStyle. "So we started talking, just as friends. Just casually chatting. I was getting hot when he was talking about it all [laughs]. So after that we just continued talking, and then, I don’t know—I love his world."
In the interview, Williams revealed that she isn't sure if she wants to play tennis if she has another baby, although she said, "We've got to have more." She told InStyle, "If I weren’t working, I’d already be pregnant."
She also talked about what it's like to return to tennis after giving birth. "Since [her daughter Alexis Olympia] was born, I haven't been apart from her for more than a day," Williams said, adding that she wakes up at either 2 a.m. or 4 a.m. to feed her child. "On top of that, I’m in the locker room pumping before a match because my boobs are so big. When I pump, they go down a size or two and I go out and play. It’s crazy," Williams said. "So I feed her, and then she snuggles with me, which is the best part of my day. Then we play, and after that I sneak away to practice, usually around 8 a.m. The only rule I have at practice is to be done at 1 p.m., because as much as I love tennis, I need to be with her. I want to put her above everything else I’m doing, so I take calls when she naps."
But the tennis star didn't only open up about the loves of her own life. Elsewhere in the interview, Williams shed some insight on what it was like to attend the royal wedding. "It was super fun," she told InStyle. "You know, I've known Meghan [Markle] for two years so it was good to see my friend happy." She also said she put "a lot" of planning into the two dresses she wore. "I worked with [Valentino designer] Pierpaolo Piccioli [for my reception look], and I had a great time. The first thing he showed me, I was like, 'This is it. I don’t need anything else,'" Williams said. "It was such a big hit. I was supposed to wear heels originally, and I’m thinking, 'C’mon, Serena—reception. Heels or shoes? Heels or shoes?' I decided to go with the shoes [laughs]."
