We knew it was slightly too good to be true: Serena Williams has taken it upon herself to shut down one of the most delightful rumors to emerge from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's royal wedding, earlier this month: that one of the games at the post-wedding reception was beer pong. Beer pong! How gauche for those notoriously stuffy royals, but oh so fun for the Yanks in attendance. Sadly, it just wasn't meant to be.
"No even remotely true," Williams told a few news outlets at the French Open this week. "I don't even drink beer." We know what you're thinking—she just denies the fact that she doesn't even drink beer. What a good pivot, the beer pong–ing still could've occurred despite her personal taste being against it! But nah, because she followed up with this very clear, very concise statement: "There was no beer pong." Still, she admitted that her and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, had a "big laugh" over the rumors, and they thoroughly enjoyed their royal wedding experience. Frankly, who wouldn't?
There are plenty of other amusing rumors circulating about what went down at the reception—personally, we love the image of George Clooney exclusively bartending with tequila and Idris Elba manning the DJ booth—but one that's by far the most poignant is that Markle reportedly broke royal tradition to read a love poem to her new husband in front of the crowd.
"Meghan totally stole the show. It was the most special part of the entire day and the most unexpected. She read her poem like the professional actress she is," one wedding source explained to The Sun. "Most of the room was misty-eyed by the final line. Harry looked so proud and had to wipe away a tear. She spoke about their first date and falling in love at first sight."
