Once a couple is engaged, it is common practice to assume that the bride-to-be is jumping for joy in anticipation of planning a wedding. And, indeed, that is often the case. But what about the future grooms in these scenarios? The truth is, they often enjoy wedding planning too.
Although men aren’t typically expected to partake in the excitement of planning a wedding, many profess to secretly be finding enjoyment in the process. Behind the veils of their Reddit usernames, some recently engaged and newly married men shared with us how wedding planning became a guilty pleasure.
A little of everything
"I loved picking the DJ/dealing a lot with the musical choices for the ceremony and the must/do-not-play lists at the reception. It was fun putting a bit of a personal twist on the usual standards and doing some more out-there music peppered in. I loved the food tasting for picking our menu. (Our caterer was fucking awesome, so hey, lots of small plates of great food sound damn good to me.) I loved building our registry at Bed Bath & Beyond with the fun little scanner gun. I'm the primary cook at home, so I was like a kid in a candy story with all those small appliances and gadgets. I may not have gone over-the-moon about it, but I have to admit I enjoyed picking out things from Michaels/Jo-Ann/A.C. Moore/etc. for decorations and our favors with my wife. Sure, there were stressful moments and it got tedious often, but I do have an eye for decorating, and it was fun being creative." —Dajbman22
"We did our own decorations. Scavenging every thrift store in a 50-mile radius for various doodads, building all the decorations, and then waking up at ass'o'clock in the morning of our wedding day to personally decorate the hall was very satisfying." —Casus125
Teamwork is the dream work
"Teaming up with my fiancée to accomplish a common goal was gratifying. It brought out the strengths and weaknesses of both of us, but it also highlighted the way our attributes complement each other." —BtheChangeUwant2C
Flowers and cake and quality time, oh my
"All of it! From the folding of the 1,000 flowers to asking our friend to hook us up with a cake from her bakery... It was all great time spent with my wife." —ABSOLUTELY__BASED
It’s all fun…so far
"I'm juuuuust getting started, but I'm enjoying everything so far. Enjoyed ring shopping and finding something great for my SO. Enjoyed making the guest list and getting excited at who's going to be celebrating with us/making fun of some of the more annoying extended family that we had to invite. Enjoyed walking through our chosen venue spots and imagining what the day is going to look like. So far it's all been fun, but none of the real work has really started yet." —whatswhat61
Although our most recently engaged interviewee claims that none of the real work has really started, our chats with these men proved that for some guys, wedding planning isn’t really work at all.
