The holidays are always a special time, but they can carry even more meaning if it’s your first holiday season as a couple, engaged, or married. We asked real couples what made their firs holiday season together so special. Here’s what they had to say.
“My fiancé and I are getting married in December of next year. Because we wanted to be with family for the holidays, we are planning a mini moon in Vermont, just before Christmas! We will enjoy the snow and relax after all the excitement of the wedding!” —Merry, 27 and John, 30
“George and I will spend our first Christmas on our honeymoon in St. Lucia. It will be extra special since it will be our first Christmas as husband and wife, and most likely our one and only Christmas just us two.” —Maria and George, 30
“This season is even more fun than usual because we feel like more of a complete family unit. It was so fun and exciting hearing his nieces and nephew call me Aunt for the first time on Thanksgiving. We loved decorating our tree with some extra special newly married ornaments and ordering our Christmas cards to say Mr. and Mrs. for the first time! My friends at work got us wine for each holiday of our first married year and we love reading each special message for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. Last year I opened my engagement ring on Christmas morning so I am not sure any gift will ever top that but our wedding memories and thoughts of a bright future make this year extra special.” —Elizabeth, 31 and Bryant, 29
“Our first Christmas was extra special, filled with unique gifts that used photos from our weddings, fun ornaments, and just a different feeling. I loved writing out gift tags to 'my husband' and sharing a Christmas morning just us two.” —Nicole and Anthony, 30
“We got married in November so we could finally relax and enjoy our first holiday season married. There was less stress, less wedding conversations (that do get a little old after a while) and more just a feeling of like, okay, this is our life now and we are settled. It was exciting and peaceful at the same time.” —Erica and Christian, 29
“What makes the holiday season special for my husband Rick and I is we are now living in the same state. Rick and I were long distance for a number of years as he lived in Wisconsin and I lived in New York. Since Rick is Jewish and I am Catholic, we celebrate both holidays with family and friends. We are now able to celebrate together instead of flying back and forth alone which makes it even more special.” —Stephanie, 28 and Rick, 31
“There’s always something so exciting about the holiday season when you are a huge lover of Christmas and the winter time, like I am. But this year particularly as a newly engaged couple, this holiday season tops the charts. There is nothing greater than receiving gifts from our friends and family to really commemorate our first holiday season as a future Mr. and Mrs. Between the picture frames, coffee mugs, Christmas stockings, ornaments, and personalized gifts our home is decorated to tell our love story, which makes it so much more special during this time of year.” —Samantha, 26 and John, 30
