Months of speculation came to a halt Friday morning when Princess Eugenie finally walked down the aisle to her now-husband Jack Brooksbank and revealed her wedding dress.
Leading up to the wedding, various British-based designers were rumored to be in the running, and Eugenie shocked everyone with a stunning Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos wedding dress. The custom gown features a slightly off-the-shoulder fold-over neckline, long sleeves and show stopping train. But, how does it compare to the iconic 1980s gown her mother, Sarah Ferguson, wore on her own wedding day? Royal watchers that we are, we're dissecting both looks to see where Princess Eugenie paid tribute to her famous mom.
Princess Eugenie incorporated special meaning into her look through the use of embroidered flowers. According to Kensington Palace, the dress is embroidered with thistle for Scotland—a nod to Balmoral castle, the royal family’s Scottish vacation home—a shamrock for Ireland to represent her maternal family, and the York rose and ivy to represent the couple’s home.
Overall Eugenie’s dress was a lovely, modern, regal, and sophisticated creation, fairly different from the dress her mother Sarah Ferguson wore over 30 years ago.
When Fergie married Prince Andrew at Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986, she wore designer Lindka Cierach. The gown, made from ivory duchesse satin, featured a huge skirt, puffy sleeves, a scoop neckline and beaded bodice. The only real similarity here is that like her daughter, Fergie’s dress had meaningful embroidery. Her train was 17 feet long and had the couple’s initials, A and S, sewn into it with silver beads.
Eugenie and Fergie’s accessories differed as well. Eugenie chose not to wear a veil, and wore just the Greville Emerald tiara. It was created by Boucheron in 1919 and features a 93.70-carat center stone. Queen Elizabeth inherited it from her mother in 2002.
While Eugenie went for a something-borrowed tiara, her mother’s was brand new. Fergie rocked the York Diamond tiara on her big day, which was specially commissioned for her as a gift from Queen Elizabeth for her wedding.
Eugenie and Fergie’s mother-daughter looks align when it comes to their engagement rings. They each have colored center-stones. Eugenie’s features a pink padparadscha sapphire and her mother’s is a prominent Burmese ruby. Both sparklers are complete with a halo of diamonds.
While their distinct looks showcase their individual personalities and the style of the times, their looks for today’s royal wedding were very complementary. Fergie wore a emerald ensemble to perfectly match her daughter’s bridal accessories.
