When it comes to style choices, the women of the British royal family typically receive much more attention than their male counterparts. This week, however, the sartorial spotlight has been turned, however briefly, upon Prince Harry—or, more specifically, upon his hole-y shoes.
This past Saturday, Harry, accompanied by Meghan Markle, attended his close friend Charlie van Straubenzee's wedding at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Frensham, Surrey. For the festivities, Meghan—whose 37th birthday fell on the same day as the wedding—wore a chic Club Monaco dress with a pleated multicolor skirt, while Harry sported classic British wedding attire: gray striped trousers, a royal blue vest over his white button-down shirt, and a long black morning coat.
It wasn't until a few days later that people started noticing a tiny, slightly-off detail about the couple's otherwise perfectly polished ensembles. If you look very closely at pictures of Harry and Meghan at the wedding, you'll notice that there's a small hole in the bottom of the sole of Harry's left shoe, Elle reports. And though Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and their husbands reportedly have a seven-figure budget to cover things like the duchesses' designer dresses for their many royal appearances, that doesn't necessarily mean Prince Harry would purchase a brand-new pair of dress shoes just because his old pair has a tiny, easily repaired hole in the bottom.
There are plenty of reasons why Harry would wear a pair of (barely) damaged shoes to a fancy outing. Perhaps they're his favorite or most comfortable pair, or he just didn't get to the cobbler in time for the wedding. Even more likely, though, is that, since the hole doesn't appear to go all the way through the shoe, there's a good chance the Duke of Sussex didn't even realize that the ball of his foot was mere millimeters from touching the ground, until headlines started popping up this week about his hole-y footwear. That said, hopefully those headlines will show Harry what it's like to walk in his wife's (perfectly intact) shoes for a change, as the eyes of the world tend to scrutinize her every fashion choice.
