With each passing day, as the May 19 royal wedding draws closer and closer, even more exciting details about the event are coming to light. On Tuesday morning, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed everything we need to know about the most important food to be served on their big day: the wedding cake.
Every part of the cake—from the baker chosen to the flavors—represents something special about the happy couple. Pastry chef Claire Ptak, who was raised in California and now owns the London-based Violet Bakery, was chosen to craft perhaps one of the most important cakes of all-time, according to a tweet from Kensington Palace. Turns out Markle had a connection to Ptak long before she met her fiancé: According to the palace, she previously interviewed Chef Ptak for her former lifestyle website, the Tig. The cake itself will capitalize on the timing of the wedding. "Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers," the official statement reads. Late last year, rumors began circulating that the royal wedding cake would include banana, though it appears that the fruit will not make an appearance. And it seems the royal couple continues to be as traditional as they come with their choice of lemon and elderflower; in the old days, a classic British wedding cake was actually a fruit cake soaked in alcohol.
With their choice of desserts finally out in the open, it seems like there will be no "cheese cakes" (a.k.a. beautiful cakes made entirely out of cheese) in sight on their big day. Apparently, the couple's impromptu taste test of the new trend earlier this year was just for fun.
