Mere hours after the announcement of their engagement sent the rumor mill into overdrive, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are clearing up some of the speculation surrounding their relationship and engagement. The newly engaged pair sat down on Monday with the BBC's Mishal Husain for their first official joint interview, during which they shared some intimate details from their romance.
The couple revealed that Harry's proposal took place on a low-key Sunday night earlier this month, while they were "trying to roast a chicken" for dinner at Nottingham Cottage, the duo's residence on the Kensington Palace grounds. "It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic," Markle said, before confirming that she said yes immediately. "She didn't even let me finish. She said, 'Can I say yes, can I say yes?'" Harry said. "Then there was hugs and I had the ring in my finger. I was like, 'Can I give you the ring?' She was like, 'Oh yes, the ring!' It was a really nice moment, just the two of us. And I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well."
Speaking of the ring, Harry offered a little more information about the hardware he designed for Markle. "It's yellow gold, because that's her favorite. The main stone itself is sourced from Botswana, and the little diamonds on either side are from my mother's jewelry collection, to make sure that she's with us on this crazy journey together," he said. Meghan added that she's honored to wear Princess Diana's diamonds. "Everything about Harry's thoughtfulness and the inclusion of that, and, obviously, not being able to meet his mom, it's so important to me to know that she's part of this with us."
They also shared the story of how they were set up on a blind date about a year and a half ago. "We were introduced actually by a mutual friend," Harry said. "We met once, then twice — two back-to-back dates in London last July, beginning of July. Then I think it was three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana and we camped out with each other under the stars."
Markle and Prince Harry both revealed that neither knew much about the other before they met in person. "Because I'm from the States, you don't grow up with the same understanding of the royal family and so, while I now understand very clearly there's a global interest there, I didn't know much about him," Markle said. "And so the thing that I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was, I had one question: 'Well, is he nice?'" Harry also confessed that the Suits star was nowhere near his radar before last year. "I'd never even heard about her," he said. "I'd never watched Suits, I'd never heard of Meghan before, and I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her."
And now, they're ready to take the next big steps together. "We're a fantastic team, we know we are," Harry said, adding that the fact that he and Markle fell in love so quickly was proof that the "stars were aligned" for them.
