Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s unconventional baby name came as a surprise to many, but there were at least two royal fans who saw it coming as far back as October 2018!
According to Hello!, a light bulb may have clicked for Harry, 34, when he made the acquaintance of a young boy with the same moniker in the crowd during his and Meghan’s royal tour in Auckland, New Zealand.
Archie Somerville-Ryan told Channel 5 News that the Duke of Sussex had complimented him on it upon meeting him. "He said, 'I like that name' or something like that [to Meghan]. And then when it all ended, my mum said, 'Imagine if they call [their baby] Archie.' ”
What’s more, the philanthropist seemingly called his wife, 37, over to get her approval. “He said, 'Come on Meghan, look at these guys.'...And then he introduced our names and things to Meghan, and kind of like nodded when they said our names."
Archie’s mom, Emily Somerville-Ryan, also remembered the moment. "My friend Bridget said 'Oh my goodness, he was so into Archie—he's definitely going to call the baby Archie,' and I thought 'What?' ” she told Newshub.
Meghan and Harry announced that their newborn son would be called Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on Thursday, May 8—two days after he was born.
While it's entirely possible they first heard the name from the Somerville-Ryans, there are some other theories floating around about the inspiration behind little Archie’s title: Amy Poehler, for one, told Seth Meyers that she believes the royal couple got the idea from her.
“You kinda have a William and Harry situation, your younger one’s a little redhead,” the talk show host pointed out to his former Saturday Night Live costar during her Thursday, May 9, appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
“I do. I have a ginger,” she said, adding. “Now that you say it, I really feel like [Harry and Meghan are] copying me! Like, get off my jock, man!”
Others still believe Archie was chosen as a way to honor Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, as she reportedly had a Scottish ancestor who shared the name: Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll.
Then again, there's also Meghan's connection to the name: According to The Sun, her mother, Doria Ragland, once rescued a cat called Archie.
Guess we'll never know...
