While we’re sure Meghan Markle is perfectly fine with her stunning three-stone engagement ring from Prince Harry, she could have been rocking Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring instead. Many assume that because Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with the rock eight years ago that he was the one who inherited the ring, but it was actually the Duke of Sussex's first.

According to Express, Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell said in the 2017 Amazon Prime documentary The Diana Story that the ring was given to Harry after his mother’s death in 1997. (Each of the brothers got to keep something of their mother's when she died.) William reportedly chose to keep Diana's Cartier watch which she had received as a 21st birthday present from her father, and Harry picked the ring.

“I remember when I held Mummy's hand when I was a small boy and that ring always hurt me because it was so big,” Burrell recalled Harry saying at the time. The ring, designed by crown jeweler Garrard, was set on a white gold band and included 14 solitaire diamonds—and cost about $60,000—so we’re not surprised this rock got in the way of some mother-son hand holding.

Even though it was his special memento of his mother's, Harry selflessly gave it to William to propose to Kate. Talking to William, Harry said, “Wouldn’t it be fitting if she had Mummy’s ring?” Burrell recounted.

Harry reportedly continued, “Then one day that ring will be sat on the throne of England." Burrell added, "Harry gave up his precious treasure. His one thing he kept from his mother, he gave to his brother. That’s selfless, kind, and exactly who Diana was.”

Even though Meghan didn’t come into the picture until many years later, she was still able to have a piece of Diana in her ring. The center diamond from Botswana is flanked by two diamonds that belonged to the princess herself. During the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first joint interview after announcing their engagement, Harry revealed that the special addition was "to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together."

In the end, both royal brides got their "something blue" gift from Diana: Meghan was also given Diana's famous emerald-cut Aquamarine ring from Harry on their wedding day.
