It's official: Baby Sussex has arrived! Meghan Markle gave birth to a boy early Monday morning and, just moments after the official announcement, Prince Harry made his first-ever public statement about the newborn. Just one glance at this video shows how happy and positively giddy the new father is.
"I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy earlier this morning, a very healthy boy," Prince Harry said per CNN. "Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It's been the most amazing experience I could ever possibly imagine."
He continued, grinning ear-to-ear as he marveled over how Meghan dealt with labor. "How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful to all the love and support of everybody out there, from everybody out there. It's been amazing, so just wanted to share this with everybody."
"This little thing is absolutely to die for. I'm just over the moon," he added.
Off camera, Harry reportedly got a little more candid about his first few hours as a dad, saying “I’ve had about two hours’ sleep,” according to ITV. Welcome to fatherhood, Harry!
A statement from Buckingham Palace confirmed that Markle had gone into labor on Monday after weeks of speculation over her due date. Hours later, the couple released the news of their baby boy on their joint Instagram account. A blue photo with the text "It's a boy!" was posted at about 9 a.m. The caption read, "We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz. The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives."
The couple has not shared the baby's name yet, but that's one of the details we'll get in the coming days. Many people have been taking bets, and Arthur, Alexander, Philip, and Albert are all possible and highly favored choices. Looks like everyone is going to have to do what we've been perfecting the last few weeks on royal baby watch: Keep waiting. But at least now we have a new baby to celebrate!
