The week is off to a great start as we fill in another two pieces of the royal wedding puzzle: This morning, we learned that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be cutting the first royal wedding cake to be made from bananas. Now we know the identity of Prince Harry's best man: It’s (drumroll, please) none other than Prince William himself.
This is according to an unnamed source, who spilled the deets to Us Weekly. “Harry has several close guy friends, but there’s no way he would ask anyone but William to take on the top job,” the source said. Another source told the magazine that the royal kiddos will be involved as well: Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, will play as-yet-unknown parts in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials. Plus Ivy, the daughter of Markle’s friend/stylist Jessica Mulroney, will also make an appearance.
As the source says, Prince Harry probably wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, he served as as his brother’s best man way back in 2011, delivering a very memorable speech that included hilarious impressions of the bride and groom. Nevertheless, there’s still a chance that Prince William would not be Harry’s best man. This is because, technically speaking, there’s no such thing as a best man at a royal wedding, according to Town & Country. Instead, what we call a best man is known as a “supporter” in a royal wedding, Marlene Koenig, a British royalty expert, told T&C.
This means that back in 2011, Prince William was actually breaking protocol when he asked his brother to be his best man and not his supporter. We won’t know for sure whether Prince Harry returns the favor until he (or the royal Twitter) confirms it. Still, that’s another royal mystery solved. With the best man (or supporter), cake, and location ticked off, we hope the dress or maid of honor is next.
