Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Engagement: Everything You Need to Know
Sorry, ladies! The world’s most eligible bachelor is officially off the market. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged. And we can barely contain our excitement! The prince and his American bride-to-be made the announcement this morning via a statement from Clarence House after becoming engaged earlier this month.
“His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month,” Clarence House said in a statement. “Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty the Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle’s parents." The statement also added that the couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace and that the wedding will take place in spring 2018.
It’s also royal tradition that the sovereign (aka the Queen), approve of anyone marrying into the royal family—so we know that Meghan Markle has the royal seal of approval. Congrats are, of course, the first order of business to the engaged couple—we wish them a lifetime of happiness. The couple is set to make an official appearance in front of the press later today. But here's everything we know so far about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement.
Harry famously gave up Princess Diana's sapphire ring so that William could propose to Kate. But Markle’s engagement ring also caused a frenzy. The ring, designed by Prince Harry himself, has a large center stone from Botswana, complemented with two diamonds from Diana's personal collection.
Prince Harry popped the question earlier this month. The couple is choosing to keep the details private for the moment. “That will come later,” Harry said. But he was happy to add that the proposal was romantic, when asked. “Of course it was,” said the Prince. Markle added: "Very." It was also confirmed that Harry kept it traditional and asked Markle's parents for their daughter's hand in marriage. In a statement released by the Palace on Monday, Markle's parents said: “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.”
What She Wore
Ever the fashionista, Markle stunned in a white coat by Line the Label for her first royal appearance.
The Love Story
The couple began dating in 2016, with Prince Harry releasing a statement confirming the relationship, and asking for privacy for his love. As further evidence of a serious relationship, they attended a wedding together in Jamaica, were seen together at a Polo match, and even attended Pippa Middleton’s wedding reception together. A trip to Africa followed in the summer of 2017—with many speculating Prince Harry would pop the question in the same location as his brother did. But alas, we ended up having to wait a bit longer for this prince to propose.
Finally, Markle addressed her royal romance in the October 2017 issue of Vanity Fair, telling the mag, “We’re a couple. We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
Following the Vanity Fair article, a source revealed to Us Weekly that the pair took another major step in their relationship—meeting the fam! Reportedly, Markle met her royal beau's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in the fall. (It took Kate Middleton five years to score face time with the Queen!) And with that, Markle gained the royal stamp of approval.
So, I guess we are now on royal wedding watch. Again! Can’t wait! Congrats to the happy couple.
