Adelaide and Brett first met in October 2011 when they shared drinks at a small wine bar in Seattle, Washington. A year and a half later, Addie and Brett flew to Napa, California for a rare weekend getaway. "I was in my residency and had gotten someone to cover me for the weekend so I could attend a party for my mother," says Addie. "After the party was over I had changed into my pajamas to watch a movie with my family and Brett called me over to a bench swing overlooking the valley." There, Addie says, he popped the question with a custom-made engagement ring as they watched the sunset.
The pair selected July 12, 2014 as their wedding date and invited 150 of their most important friends and family to celebrate with them at the Doe Bay Resort in Olga, Washington. Their small island destination was a no-brainer. "We had gone to a music festival there together two years before and loved it," Addie says. "Almost all of our guests were able to stay on site, which was important to us. We wanted the weekend to feel like summer camp."
The island resort was the perfect venue to host their wedding weekend. While getting to the remote locale was a little difficult (the best man even joked about it in his speech!) the trip was clearly worth it. To welcome guests to the venue, Addie and Brett packed gift bags with local trail mix, sunscreen, and a weekend itineary that included events like a BBQ, yoga class, wine tasting, and morning after brunch.
Addie chose a romantic lace Claire Pettibone wedding dress after falling in love with the open-back detail, which was a stark contrast from the ball gowns she had initial favored. "They really didn't fit the venue, and in the end they kind of overwhelmed my small frame," she says.
For her something borrowed, Addie wore a pair of earrings her bridesmaid had been given on her own wedding day. Her bouquet featured white garden roses, pink ranunclus, bleeding hearts, and fresh herbs. The groom wore a classic black Ralph Lauren suit with a sleek black tie.
Addie's bridesmaids wore mismatched J. Crew gowns in flowing fabrics and shades of pink, accessorized with their own jewelry. They carried pink bouquets with dahlias, protea, and fresh herbs. The groomsmen looked dashing in their own black suits paired with blue Michael Kors ties. "We have both been in several weddings," Addie says of asking their attendants to keep their looks simple. "It tends to get expensive for the bridal party, so we tried to just have them wear what they already owned."
For the ceremony, guests sat in mismatched chairs along an aisle adorned with fresh greenery garlands. For an extra dose of whimsy, colorful ribbons waved off of classic cross back chairs.
The couple exchanged vows overlooking the water and were married by a mutual friend. While they chose not to write their own vows, the couple personalized their ceremony by asking each of their fathers to offer readings.
The couple's planner, Valley and Co., created a cozy and romantic outdoor reception space that fit with the couples relaxed and eclectic vibe.
Each wooden table was set with mismatched vintage china and mixed arrangements of pink, white, and peach roses. Guests found their seats with the help of calligraphed seashell escort cards.
The bride and groom's head table was adorned with a vintage-inspired tablecloth and a bold pink-and-white centerpiece that included tulips, roses, and bleeding hearts.
Guests dined on a feast of delicious local dishes, including an oyster bar, salmon, and grilled summer vegetables.
Doe Bay created several delicious signature cocktails for guests to enjoy, which included a Moscow Mule, Manhattan, and a garden cocktail made from seasonal herbs and ginger bear. Instead of a wedding cake, Addie and Brett cut into a variety of pies that were topped with ice cream from a local island creamery.
Addie's advice for other couples? "No one will ever see all the alternatives you chose from, so don't stress about all the decisions. No one will ever know (or care!) and the day and décor will still be gorgeous no matter what."
