Oprah Almost Committed a Major Faux Pas at the Royal Wedding

A last-minute fashion emergency

Updated 05/21/18

Queen Oprah showed up to St. George's Chapel Saturday morning slaying the royal wedding style game in a custom pink Stella McCartney dress, but as it turns out the outfit was a very last-minute decision. Apparently, what she had initially intended on wearing to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's nuptials would have broken one major decorum rule.

The legendary television personality posted a video to Instagram on Saturday revealing the details of what she calls "dress-gate," in which she decided to switch up her look a mere hours before the royal wedding because she was worried that what she'd intended to wear might come across as an inappropriate color.

“Realized Friday morning the beige dress I was planning to wear to Royal ceremony would photograph too ‘white’ for a wedding,” Oprah captioned a video of herself explaining what happened the day before the event. "I would like to thank the Stella McCartney team for working all night long to get this dress finished because we had ‘dress-gate’ — wrong color,” she says in the clip, which shows her wearing the new version of the dress in the right color — a pale blush pink. She paired the last minute look with a vintage Philip Treacy hat, which she revealed has been in her closet since 2005, but she added some new feathers to spice things up for the big day.

One person who did wear a white Stella McCartney look to the royal wedding? Duchess Meghan, who changed out of her Givenchy wedding gown for a sleek, skin-bearing Stella look for her and Prince Harry's second reception, at Frogmore House. Aside from the bride, Duchess Kate Middleton actually wore a shade of pale yellow, which photographed a bit white, to the ceremony, too, but we're guessing she got that cleared with her sister-in-law (and, likely, the queen) ahead of time.
