The first year of marriage is something worth celebrating. A predictable paper-themed anniversary gift? Not so much. After my first year with my husband, Joel, I found myself wanting to reflect on our time together rather than exchange gifts. I don’t want to put down gift giving entirely—full disclosure, Joel surprised me with the leather jacket I’d had my eye on for ages. And I love it. But he and I also took time for a weekend getaway, and it was exactly what we needed and wanted. So here are a few more creative ideas to commemorate your first year or that of another newlywed couple in your life.

Weekend Getaway
I can’t stress enough how lovely our time alone together was. We spent the weekend reconnecting, shopping for our new apartment, and generally just enjoying each other’s company. We decided to treat ourselves to a hotel, but Airbnb is such a great resource for finding charming places to stay, too.

Cooking Dinner Together
Neither of you have to be serious chefs to enjoy a night in the kitchen together. Try a Blue Apron meal plan—their recipes are easy to follow and the results are absolutely delicious. Wine is always nice, too. Try a subscription from Winc, so you can skip a last-minute trip to the liquor store.

Cozy Night In
When you can’t get away, stay in. Order some dinner or whip up something great (see idea above), then snuggle up with a movie you both love. After our dinner, Joel and I went to our hotel room and passed out watching one of our favorites, My Cousin Vinny. Perfect.

Massages
Start the second year on a relaxed note. Book a Zeel Deluxe Massage Package, and the masseuse will come to wherever you two are armed with massage tables and luxe robes.

A Card, a Text, an Email
Joel and I were so flattered by all of the notes we received from friends and family on our anniversary (getting married on a holiday like New Year’s Eve probably helped). It’s such an easy way to show your love and support for married friends.
