A 1-Month Grooming Guide for the Groom-to-Be

Whether you've been on a regimented grooming kick in preparation for your wedding, or are just getting around to thinking about hair and beard options for the big day, all grooms-to-be definitely have some, well grooming, left to do before the big day. Previously, we've compiled an essential grooming checklist for the groom-to-be. Now, we're breaking it all down month-by-month—and you're in the home stretch!

This men's grooming guide is perfect for the dude who has four to five weeks left until his wedding day and needs to maximize his beauty routine, so to speak. If you've been taking care of your grooming regimen for the past five or six months, then this can also serve as the fine-tuning your routine needs. Either way, the tips below will ensure you look your best, just in time for your wedding day.

1. Skincare

Perfecting their complexion is on everyone's pre-wedding to-do list, and no matter how far along or not-so-far-along you are with your routine, the few weeks leading up to the big day are enough time for you to see an improvement. The key lies in splurging on a laser treatment according to Joshua Zeichner, MD and Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research at Mount Sinai. "One month before the wedding, you can think about a light laser treatment like Clear and Brilliant," he says. "It works by punching microscopic holes in the skin, allowing the skin to heal itself back up in a more cosmetically acceptable manner. It can be used to even skin tone, improve skin texture, and even minimize the appearance of pores." While it might sound intimidating to try a laser treatment, Dr. Zeichner assures that with this specific laser, there is virtually no downtime. You can expect a bit of redness for a few hours after the 15-minute procedure and a bit of a grainy feeling to the skin for a few days after—but you'll have incredible skin within a week, and with a daily dose of sunscreen and moisturizer, you'll maintain those benefits up until the wedding.

2. Teeth Whitening

Chances are, you'll be grinning from ear to ear on your wedding day. And with all eyes on you, you'll want your smile to be as bright as can be. "I think we can all agree that the smile is one of the most important elements of the big day, and is captured in pictures that will be looked at and treasured for years to come," says Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, DMD PC. "Grooms are so busy in the weeks leading up to the wedding, which is why scheduling an in-office whitening one month prior is close enough to the big day to let them flash a truly brilliant, glowing smile at all of their wedding events." Treatments for in-office whitening can range from a few hundred dollars to up to $1000, but the results are well worth it. "For best results, I recommend following an in-office whitening treatment with a monthly at-home whitening maintenance regimen," says Dr. Levine. He recommends using his GLO Brilliant Teeth Whitening Device ($199, available at Dermstore) once a day for 30 days to amp up that new megawatt smile.

3. Hair

"If you only go to one pre-wedding [hair] appointment, this is the one you should not miss!" says NYC-based men's hairstylist Martial Vivot. He says to book a hair appointment a month before the wedding to trim up your signature style and decide how you want to wear your hair on the big day. "At this visit, never do anything drastic," he maintains. Vivot says to use the appointment to discuss any questions you may have with your stylist on how to style your hair and get product recommendations. "Ask your stylist specific questions at this appointment, like how to achieve the look at home and a step-by-step tutorial on the products to use, including how much to use." Think of this appointment as your personalized hair guide, so that on your big day, you can DIY your 'do with your arsenal of hair and beard products.

4. Gym

If you're maintaining your gym schedule, step things up at the one-month mark and focus mostly on higher intensity workouts, says Julie Wandzilak, Tier X Coach at Equinox in NYC. "This means shorter rest periods, longer circuits, and approaching full-body workouts and higher heart rate throughout the whole workout." She says that the next four weeks are where you will see the most improvement and progress in your pre-wedding gym routine (translation: book those HIIT classes, stat). "The cardiac output, duration, and heart rate will be key components to making sure your body is staying within the fat-burning metabolism zone within this time frame," she explains.
