Losing an engagement ring is stressful, but losing an engagement ring in the middle of New York City's Times Square is downright devastating. For one couple, this nightmare became a reality when a man dropped an engagement ring down a drain—but just when the couple thought all hope was lost, the New York City Police Department stepped in and found the missing ring. After days of searching for the couple via social media, the police found the pair who lost their gorgeous diamond ring—and with the help of Ellen DeGeneres, the groom-to-be was able to propose with the ring he thought was gone forever.
According to the NYPD, a man got down on one knee just before midnight on Friday, November 30, to propose to his girlfriend, when he dropped the engagement ring down an eight-foot utility grate in the middle of Times Square. The couple called emergency services and asked the police for help, but they could not immediately find the couple's ring. Hours later, the police eventually found it—but by the time they located the ring, the couple had left, without leaving their names or any contact information.
In a now-viral tweet on Twitter, the NYPD shared a security video of the moment the soon-to-be bride and groom lost the ring. The department wrote in a caption,"WANTED for dropping his fiancée's ring in Times Square! She said Yes- but he was so excited that he dropped the ring in a grate," the NYPD News tweeted Saturday. " ... Officers rescued it & would like to return it to the happy couple."
On Sunday, December 2, the NYPD shared a follow-up tweet that they had located the couple, thanks to thousands of retweets and shares by social media users. "We would like to thank everyone who shared this story! The (now) happy couple is back in their home country, but thanks to your retweets they heard we were looking for them! We’re making arrangements to get them their ring back. Congratulations!"
Ellen DeGeneres caught wind of the story, and of course, had to make the couple's dream come true. DeGeneres invited bride Daniella Anthony and groom John Drennan on her show, where they told the story of how they were walking back from a Broadway show when the groom dropped the beloved ring. After sharing their nerve-wracking story, the talk show host surprised the couple by inviting out the policemen who found the couple's ring, allowing them to hand-delivery the bauble back to its rightful owners.
Drennan got the opportunity to pop the question a second time, and the proposal was equally emotional. Following the proposal, the two police officers had their chance to poke fun at the couple's misfortune. One officer offered the couple a pack of ring adjusters, telling the couple "please don't drop it again."
