Attention single ladies: You’re doing great! Sometimes it’s hard to feel like that when your social media is flooded with endless ring selfies, wedding photos and baby announcements, and you start to think you’re the only single one left. When you need a reminder that you are in fact single and THRIVING, there’s an account for that. Follow @notengaged on Instagram.
The account started by Mary McCarthy in 2016 is a collection of left hand selfies sans engagement ring. They showcase McCarthy miraculously living her life without a ring on that finger. McCarthy approaches single life, which admittedly can suck at times, with the perfect amount of humor. Her bio reads, “hi. im not engaged but im ok i promise. follow the adventures of me and my unwed left hand as we realize things are ok. 👌🏻😭 #notengaged #blessed.”
McCarthy recently shared her motivation for the page with Good Morning America. "It's basically how I'm living my life, and how I'm single and I have my own apartment and how single girls are doing just as fine as everybody else," McCarthy said. "As jokesy and silly as it is, I try to skew it more to empowerment ... even though there's the emoji with the huge tears streaming down."
She added, "You can do it on your own and be totally fine."
McCarthy created the account after a friend's engagement party two years ago, and has since grown her page to over 30,000 followers. Although she is an advocate for the #notengaged, she still supports her friends as they cross over to the other side. On her personal Instagram account there are plenty of photos of McCarthy showing up for her friends’ weddings and bridal showers.
"There's so much on social media that you're comparing yourselves to—especially marriage and how wonderful it is," McCarthy said. "I have nothing against marriage or relationships, that's not the message at all. No matter how you're choosing your life to go, you're doing it for yourself and that's all that matters."
As for McCarthy’s future plans, she expects to be officially “not engaged and alone forever” on December 21, 2022 according to the wedding website she made. The venue is “crying in bed,” and she added the most beautiful love story to the page. “I love tacos and I get to eat them whenever i want,” she wrote. ”Sure do I cry myself to sleep sometimes? Yea sure, but when u have cash dollas to buy tacos y do you need warm hugs at night?”

While you ponder that hard-hitting question, remember that McCarthy is just in it for the laughs. She said, "If it helps make a few people laugh or smile, that's all I need from it."
