Despite all our suspicions that Nick Jonas took a cue from Sweet Home Alabama and reserved a Tiffany and Co. store to propose to soon-to-be-wife Priyanka Chopra, we now officially know that the 26-year-old took a more original, albeit still incredibly romantic, route to kickstart the pair's whirlwind engagement.
But before we get into that, let's backtrack a bit. Believe it or not, the pair's summer proposal wasn't the first time Jonas got down on one knee. The original instance? The night they met. Yep. In a joint couple's interview with Vogue, the singer admitted that he initially kneeled before Chopra at last year's Vanity Fair Oscar party.
Call it fate, intuition, or maybe even one too many drinks, but Jonas, clad in a velvet suit with a white rose nestled into his chest pocket, recalls lingering by the bar when his future love waltzed past. The Quantico star had reportedly caught his attention in a black gown by Michael Kors Collection.
"And I put my drink down, get on one knee—this is in front of a bunch of people—and I say, 'You’re real. Where have you been all my life?' " Jonas told Vogue. "Like, loud."
As dramatic as their introduction may have been, fast forward about a year and a half, and Jonas kneeled before Chopra once again—this time with a ring in hand. In the Vogue interview, he set the record straight on the pair's proposal rumors once and for all, admitting that the relationship milestone actually went down in Crete. According to the star, the trip was disguised as a birthday getaway for Chopra, who had turned 36 on July 18. However, being the ever-so-thoughtful guy, the Disney alum waited to pop the question until after midnight so as not to overshadow any celebrations on Chopra's special day. (This guy knows.)
"I got down on one knee, again, and I said: Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?" Jonas said. "No joke—she took about 45 seconds. Forty-five seconds of silence." Despite the awkward pause, during which Chopra says she fell "speechless," Jonas continued to take his shot. "I’m going to put this ring on your finger now unless you have any objections," he added.
And speaking of the ring, there is an ounce of truth related to the Tiffany and Co. rumor. The "Jealous" singer did in fact rent out an entire light blue–hued jewelry store in London, but to shop for Chopra's engagement ring a few weeks before the proposal. Unsurprisingly, fellow bros Kevin and Joe Jonas came to help out as well. The iconic store's Blue Box Cafe in New York City was also home to Chopra's bridal shower earlier in the month.
Next up for the pair? Walking down the aisle—this weekend, in fact. The lovebirds celebrated with a puja Wednesday to kick off the festivities. According to Chopra, the official wedding celebrations will pan out over three days, adding that, "people will need vacations" after all is said and done.
