In case you missed it, 2018’s biggest Christmas miracle was Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth finally tying the knot. After nearly 10 years of dating, as the singer affectionately called out in an Instagram post, the pair got married two days before Christmas at their family home in Tennessee.
While the two have been on quite a journey to this point, they owe their meet-cute to romance novelist Nicholas Sparks. He wrote the screenplay for The Last Song—the 2010 film that both Cyrus and Hemsworth starred in, bringing the couple together. The movie follows angsty teen Ronnie Miller, played by Cyrus, who is forced to live with her dad for the summer in his Southern beach town. There, she meets Will Blakelee (Hemsworth) whom Ronnie inevitably falls for.
Cyrus and Hemsworth took their on-screen love off-screen, and all the way down the aisle, and Sparks couldn’t be happier. “This makes me so happy,” the writer wrote on Twitter resharing the couple’s black and white wedding photo. “Congratulations @MileyCyrus and @LiamHemsworth. #TheLastSong"
Miley responded with three heart emojis.
Apparently, it wasn’t only Sparks who got a little nostalgic with news of the former cast mates making it #official. Fans too reminisced on where their story began, re-watching the The Last Song in droves. Amazon Prime Video revealed on Friday that news of the wedding upped the romanic movie's viewership significantly.
“Miley and Liam’s wedding had everyone feeling sentimental this week,” the account tweeted. “After news broke Wednesday, we saw a 2000% spike in streams of The Last Song. We love a happy ending. Congrats @mileycyrus and @liamhemsworth!”
The on-again, off-again couple didn’t get to this happy ending without a few ups and downs. Hemsworth initially proposed in 2012, but the two broke it off a year later. After some time apart they got back together and started publicly dating again in 2016. Cyrus confirmed that the couple was still engaged on Valentine’s day in 2017 by posting a picture of her ring on Instagram.
