Choosing a wedding song can be an uphill battle for any couple, but especially for a same-sex duo who have to work around classic songs with pronouns that don’t quite fit—until now. A new EP, which drops April 6, features classic wedding tunes that flip the script for same-sex couples.
Titled Universal Love, the album features six covers by popular artists including Bob Dylan, Kesha, St. Vincent, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, and Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke. The album was funded by MGM Resorts International and executive produced but Rob Kaplan, who, according to the New York Times, said, "The response was completely positive," when asked about receiving permission to perform the tracks with altered lyrics from the songs' original publishers.
“If you look at the history of pop music, love songs have predominantly come from one heterosexual perspective,” said Tom Murphy, a co-producer of Universal Love. “If we view music as something that brings people together, shouldn’t these popular songs be open to everyone?” Preach 🙌.
So, if your heart is set on The Temptations’ “My Girl,” the album features “My Guy” performed by Kele Okereke. Meanwhile, artist Valerie June turns “Mad About The Boy” to “Mad About The Girl.” June told the NYT that though the song’s original writer, Noël Coward, was gay, his 1932 version couldn't reflect that due to homophobia. “It brings the song full circle to know that it was written by a gay man who meant every single word of ‘Mad About the Boy,’” she said.
Kaplan started work on this album after Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard expressed his support of marriage equality in a 2012 essay for The Daily Beast, inspired by his sister, a lesbian. For the project, Gibbard chose the Beatles classic "And I Love Her," changing it to “And I Love Him.”
“It’s a song my dad often played to my mom after dinner,” he said. “Also, it’s a song everyone knows.”
The album's artists are a mix of both LGBTQ+ and straight musicians, many of whom have taken a public stance on same-sex marriage. Have a listen below!
