Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent have welcomed a bundle of joy into their lives — and it has nothing to do with blankets, poufs, rugs or any of the other comfy things in the designers' popular retail lines. The couple, who wed less than a year ago in New York City, can't get enough of being fathers to their daughter Poppy Brent-Berkus and are opening up about the true joys of parenthood.
"I've always wanted to be a parent," Berkus told People. "I had hoped that I would have this chance, but I didn't want to do it on my own."
"Until recently, we didn't think it was possible," said Brent. "But we're fortunate to be legally married and things just fell into place. We're really thankful."
The couple used a surrogate to bring their baby into the world, and Brent told People "everybody was hand in hand" for the birth, including their families and the surrogate's family.
"Our paternal instincts kicked in almost instantly," Berkus said. "She came out with her eyes open, looking around like she had been waiting for us."
Berkus even admitted he does some things he never, ever, thought he'd do. "I'm chewing on her knee caps when I'm changing diapers," he continued. "Both of my grandmothers used to say, 'I want to take a bite out of you.' And I would think, 'These crazy ladies! That is so gross.' And now I get it."
