When Allison Rosenwinkel met Paul Demyanovich during a college class at Syracuse University, the pair became fast friends. Allison kept her crush on Paul on the backburner over the next couple of years, but when the pair reconnected in San Francisco after graduation, their mutual friendship turned romantic. During the Fourth of July holiday in 2014, the duo spent some time at Allison’s parents’ summer home on a bluff in Michigan. There, Paul set up an elaborate scavenger hunt throughout the property, leading Allison, clue by clue, to the very top of the bluff, where he stood with the sunset behind him. With a custom designed Edwardian-style rose gold ring that incorporated stones from each of their grandmothers in hand, Paul asked Allison to be his wife. It wasn’t until after she said yes that the elated bride-to-be noticed that “Will you marry me” was written in the sand below.
Thanks to a cancellation at their dream venue, the future Mr. and Mrs. were able to lock down their wedding venue just a mere three days after the proposal. With the rustic Blue Dress Barn in Benton Harbor, Michigan, as the backdrop for their October 17, 2015, nuptials, Allison and Paul got to work planning a music festival-inspired celebration for 180 of their closest friends and family. With a few trips to Germany for Oktoberfest under their belts, the couple decided to merge their names and dub their wedding Demaynowinkelfest. “The name symbolized the fusion of the both of our families coming together as one in a festival inspired environment.”
With help from day-of planners at 1928 Planning Co., this pair of graphic designers put together their dream wedding featuring antique instruments, bold typography, and vibrant wildflowers that inspired the color theme. Check out the bold details in the photos by Stoffer Photography, below.
The bride and groom, both professional graphic designers, tag-teamed when it came to creating their gorgeous wedding invitation suite. "Fall music festivals inspired the overall theme of the wedding, with overgrowing greens and wildflowers, bold graphic design, and an overall whimsical nature," Allison says. "Instead of choosing colors, we decided that fall wildflowers would dictate the colors in the wedding. We used black and white as our base, and then layered color and greenery on top of it." The look was perfectly executed on their invites, giving guests a peek into what the overall wedding would look like.
Allison wore a Karen Willis Holmes silk A-line wedding dress with a removable train, which she paired with a veil that her mother had made and wore at her own wedding. Her headpiece was full of faux wild roses and peonies and featured her grandmother’s vintage brooch. As a nod to her life in New York with Paul, she carried a custom clutch designed to resemble the state's license plate.
The groom wore a charcoal gray slim fit Hugo Boss suit paired with black Monte Rosso Parido shoes. Paul completed his look with a gift from his bride; a tan leather Daniel Wellington watch with a rose gold face.
Groomsmen wore black suits and white shirts, paired with ties that were gifts from the groom. Allison’s bridesmaids chose their own mismatched dresses, but kept two simple rules in mind: The gowns had to be floor-length and feature a floral pattern with a black base. We'd say this group of stylish women totally nailed the look!
As a gift for her attendants, the bride also created custom gold necklaces featuring a quote in her handwriting for them to wear, along with custom floral headpieces from Heartshape Hotel. They each held a single dahlia embellished with greens in lieu of a traditional bouquet.
To kick the celebration off, guests grabbed a flute of champagne on their way into the ceremony space, which was set up outside the venue's barn. The couple put their creative minds together to write their ceremony from scratch, and exchanged vows under an altar archway decorated with greens, berries, and instruments.
Paul is a guitarist in a band called Gillian, so incorporating music into the big day was a big priority. “Our goal was to create an experience that brought to life the essence of a fall music festival,” Allison says. The band’s guitarist/vocalist, and Paul’s best man, Geoff, played guitar to kick off the ceremony before a local jazz band joined him for the final song.
The bride knew she wanted to get married near her parent's summer home, but the Blue Dress Barn totally exceeded her expectations. "We looked at the barn online and loved the tall arched ceilings and the laid back vibe," she says. "One visit from my parents, and we were booked. For the wedding, we had faith in the rustic venue, which provided the perfect mixture of elegance and fun."
The space was transformed to fit with Allison and Paul's vision of a fall musical festival with round tables and a long farmhouse, all topped with burlap tablecloths and chevron patterned runners. The couple found battered instruments on eBay to use as décor and centerpieces atop overgrown moss and pink, red, and orange wildflowers. Graphic table numbers, inspired by the bride and groom's invitations, were the finishing touch.
Ivory paper lanterns were hung above the tables, playing up the incredible tall ceilings within the space.
To further drive home the festival theme, guests were given VIP lanyards to find their seats for dinner, and they signed a vintage guitar rather than a guestbook.
For dinner, Allison and Paul collaborated with Chicago-based chef Angela Lee of White Horse Farms to serve a family-style dinner for a laid-back experience. The menu included roasted pork with garlic oregano mojo, Amish roasted chicken, marinated portobello mushrooms, sage walnut potatoes au gratin, and warm spinach salad. Everyone sipped on champagne, or their choice of the newlyweds’ signature drinks: a Rye Old Fashioned or Two Hearted Ale by Bell’s Brewery.
Dessert consisted of an assortment of fruit pies from a local orchard and the couple’s wedding cake — a simply frosted two-tiered carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
Allison shares a piece of wisdom for future brides, “During the wedding take a moment to pause and look around you and really take in the moment. Before you know it the night will be over.”
