Why One Montana Ranch Makes the Most Dreamy Honeymoon

The only risk at The Ranch: You’ll never want to leave

Forget what you think you know about Montana, because surprise: a very luxurious dude ranch in the Western state bordering Canada is one of the most incredible honeymoon destinations on earth. The Ranch at Rock Creek, the all-inclusive five-star guest ranch outside Philipsburg, Montana, is pure magic—and there’s not a tropical beach in sight. There doesn’t need to be. It’s everything you didn’t know you wanted for your most exciting of all holidays. A beach can be sexy, sure, but is there anything that defines romance more than cuddling together in front of a roaring fire with a glass of wine?

It’s impossible not to be wowed immediately upon entering the sprawling property, which in winter is blanketed in sparkling, white snow (if it’s actively falling, you'll swear you somehow wandered inside of a snow globe) and otherwise is coated in countless shades of green, with a babbling creek running through it year-round. It’s so dreamy that Kate Bosworth and Scarlett Johansson were both married there.

But the real romance is in the accommodations (29 in all, each completely one-of-a-kind and some in authentic 19th century buildings). There’s no such thing as a bad room at The Ranch, which all have unique themes and names. But the very best for honeymooners or any couple seeking privacy is the partially wood, partially canvas (with hydronic heated floors) Trapper Cabin, which is tucked away on the creek a short drive from the rest (it comes with a car), ensuring total and utter privacy. It couldn’t be cuter inside, but the showpiece is definitely the giant, wooden soaking tub that will be where you’ll want to retire each night, probably in the buff, to sip red wine in the hot water as you stargaze. Bluebird is another idyllic honeymoon cabin, a tad less rustic and removed and more feminine and light.

Whether or not you fancy yourself nearly professional dancers or the types with two left feet, it’s impossible not to have a blast swinging, spinning, and line dancing to a live band in the Buckle Barn if you’re lucky enough to be there for a barn dance and feast. Otherwise, every single meal is memorable, thanks to the creative culinary team led by chef Drage. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and though you two have already wooed each other, chef will seduce you both with his food, whether it’s at a Rodeo BBQ, a Sunday Dutch Oven Dinner, Montana Craft Beer Dinner or Homestead Supper Club (weekly dining options). Nightly social hour in the Great Room features seasonal cocktails and local craft beers that will prime you for the night’s tasting menu, or you can snowshoe or ski to Bikini Pond Gazebo for weekly twilight cocktails around an open fire and sunset skating.

The plethora of activities on offer (included) ensures you have plenty to do if you're active people—snowmobiling through a powdery paradise, snowshoeing, snowga (combination Nordic skiing and outdoor yoga with a view), and horseback riding (on the most beautiful, well-tempered horses), shooting sports, hiking, archery, fishing, and mountain biking, too. There are 6,000 acres to explore, after all.

The Granite Spa is a no-brainer for post-wedding decompression—think Twin Pines Massage & Foot Soak—and they also offer a “learn to massage” session that will impart skills you can use to keep up the heat for years to come, and maybe even your own “honeymoon oil” blend (ylang ylang, cinnamon, wild orange). When it’s time to liven things up a little, there’s the Silver Dollar Saloon, where you can saddle up, literally, on saddle-bar stools for a drink, shoot some pool, bowl a game or two, watch a movie, play shuffleboard or even serenade your lover with your favorite karaoke tune. The only risk at The Ranch: you’ll never want to leave.
