The news outlet cites that multiple sources have confirmed the news, and one claims that the pregnancy was "an unexpected surprise," though Kaling has no plans to halt any of her upcoming projects.
Little other information is known about Kaling's pregnancy, but The Mindy Project actress has spoken out about her plans regarding babies and marriage on multiple occasions in the past. In her 2015 book Why Not Me?, Kaling said she worries about waiting too long to have kids. "As calm as I might be, still, about once a month, I wake up at 4 AM and lie in the dark worrying about the same handful of things," she wrote, as transcribed by People. "What if my kids are really young when I die because I waited too long to have them?" she listed as one of her worries.
In a 2015 interview with Yahoo! Style, Kaling said that she plans to be "fast and loose" about kids—basically, she's not trying to get pregnant, but she's also not doing too much to prevent pregnancy. "I think I've decided that unlike everything else in my life, I'm going to be fast and loose about kids. I'm going to not actively plan, but if it happens, it would happen," she said at the time. She also noted that she would like to have kids "maybe imminently."
In an interview with Good Housekeeping in early 2015, Kaling discussed how her views on marriage have evolved. "When I was younger, I wanted so badly to be married and have kids in a rush," she said. "The way my father was with my mother when she was dying was so moving. It was such devotion. I don't know that that will happen for me, but I like it. I don't need marriage. I don't need anyone to take care of all my needs and desires. I can take care of them myself now."
Kaling was linked to writer Benjamin Nugent from 2008 to 2012, and previously dated on-again-off-again boyfriend and former The Office costar B.J. Novak from 2005-2007. There's no word on whether Novak is in any way involved in this pregnancy—but Kelly and Ryan shippers can dream, right?
