Sad news: The Mindy Project will end after its upcoming sixth season. Amazing news: Mindy Kaling is pregnant, and she is so excited about being a mom.
News of Kaling's pregnancy became public last month and was confirmed by Oprah, as all pregnancies should be. Though little was known about the pregnancy at the time, E! reported that, according to a source, the baby was "an unexpected surprise," and Kaling has no plans to halt any of her upcoming projects. Now Kaling herself is opening up about this new chapter for the first time.
On the set of The Mindy Project, the actress spoke to Today's Willie Geist about the challenges and opportunities she expects from motherhood, saying, "[I'm] really excited! It’s so unknown to me. I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands,’ which is kind of a fun feeling.”
Kaling cited her mother as her greatest parenting role model, praising her for being "incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” adding that, “my career choice was not something that she was familiar with, and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy." We bet she will.
Kaling's character on Mindy, Mindy, already has a young son, Leo, with her ex, Danny, played by Chris Messina. But not even playing a parent on television can prepare you for the reality of being one. As she joked, “It’s so easy to criticize parenting until you’re a parent, so one of the nice things about becoming a parent is that I’ll be able to openly criticize other parenting because I will have a child."
Mindy Kaling's full interview will air on Today on September 10.
