Spotting Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth together on a red carpet is one of the rarest sightings in all of Hollywood. The couple, who have been on and off since 2010 and are currently engaged, keep their relationship rather low-profile and have appeared on only three red carpets together in the past five years. The first was back in 2013, at the premiere for Liam’s brother Chris Hemsworth’s film Paranoia. The second came nearly four years later, at the premiere of Thor: Ragnarok. And the third came on Sunday night, at Elton John’s viewing party for the 2018 Academy Awards.
The two stepped out looking every bit the part of Hollywood royalty, with Liam donning a sleek, classic black tuxedo and Miley going full glam with a hot-pink and silver sequined gown and retro waves in her hair. Miley also accessorized with her 3.5-carat engagement ring on the red carpet. And while the couple appeared very much in love and very happy for their Oscars date night, the duo had previously sworn off red carpets (which explains the rare and infrequent occurrence). “I will never do a red carpet again,” she told Elle in 2016. “Why, when people are starving, am I on a carpet that’s red? Because I’m ‘important’? Because I’m ‘famous’? That’s not how I roll.”
Why Miley and Liam made an exception to her no-red-carpet rule for a non–Chris Hemsworth premiere is not clear, but Miley did tease their appearance on Twitter with a simple “See you soon!”
Miley and Liam’s relationship with red carpets is almost as unclear as their own personal relationship history. After meeting on the set of The Last Song in 2010, they became engaged in 2012, split in 2013, and reunited again in 2016—even recently sparking marriage rumors. Despite the turmoil, the two have been on solid ground since their most recent reunion—and appeared happy and in love at their Oscars date.
